Cannot connect to (or set up) Google Nest Mini

I have 7 Google Home speakers at my house and everything was working fine until about a year ago when one of them started flaking on me. Every time I'd say, "Hey Google", I'd get "Something went wrong" in response. Whenever I tried to cast to it, my device would connect, and I could control the volume, but no audio would stream. Today I attempted to resolve the issue and I'm stuck.

I tried factory resetting the failing speaker, no dice. Same issues

I purchased a new Nest Mini today and it fails to properly configure during setup. I successfully make it to the "Configuring your Nest Mini" and always end up stuck at "There was a problem setting up Nest Mini."

I tried factory resetting the device again, creating a 2.4 ghz guest network, and attempted to add it to my home via the new network and got the same error message as above.

I tried moving the Nest Mini to a part of my home where other happily connected Google Home speakers live and same problem as above.

I also tried creating a new Home in the Google Home app and adding the Nest Mini there, but same result as above.

In between each attempt, in addition to factory resetting the Nest Mini, I also uninstalled and reinstalled Google Home on my phone and still, no success.

Once I was able to get the speaker connected properly during onboarding but when I unplugged it to move it to its proper location, a mere 20' from my router, I got the "Something went wrong" reply every time I spoke to the speaker.

The other 6 speakers in my home are working as expected but I cannot add a new one no matter which device I attempt to add (I've tried an old Google Home, Nest mini 1st gen, and a brand new 2nd gen), which network I try to use (main or the 2.4 guest), where the speaker is located, or which device I use to attempt the setup (my pixel or my wife's iphone).

Does anyone have any other ideas of what to try? Is there another brand of smart speaker that works better? I'm about ready to ditch this whole ecosystem.

Hey GivingUpOnNest,

Thanks for visiting the Community.

I know how challenging it is not having a working device when needed - we appreciate your efforts. To further eliminate network issues, please try setting up your device using a mobile hotspot. Please note that you will need two mobile devices for this setup (one will serve as a router and the other to be used to set up your Google Nest Mini). Once done, check if your device will have the same behavior.

Let us know how it goes.

Cheers,

Muddi

As a last resort I swapped out my ASUS ZenWiFi AX (XT8) mesh router for an eero Pro 6E and the rogue speaker is now working. Which begs the question, why did I have to change from one $500 mesh system to another $500 mesh system for the Nest mini to work again? Both routers are recently released high end units. What network setting could differ between the two resulting in major connectivity issues?

Hey GivingUpOnNest,

Perfect! Happy to hear that you are able to set up your Nest Mini now! Each router has different security settings that may prevent other smart devices from connecting.

Let me know if you still have questions and concerns otherwise, I'll be locking this thread after 24 hours.

Cheers,
