Cannot transfer Youtube Music from Hub 2 to any other Google speaker.

kgatgmaildotcom
Community Member

So, I have this problem with my Hub 2, from the moment I bought it.  Which is about a week ago.
I've tried everything I could think of: unplugging and replugging everything: one by one and all at once.  Put everything back to factory settings.  Reset the router.  Renamed all devices.  I cannot find any answer.

The problem is when I play music on my Hub 2 with Youtube Music.  It's on my bedstand, so I wake up and ask for music.  No problem.  As expected, it opens Youtube Music (the Youtube Music app, not the Youtube app), and plays music. Perfect.
Then, when getting out of bed, I want to transfer this music to other speaker(s) in my house.  So I ask, "Hey Google, transfer the music to SpeakerX" or "Hey Google, play this on SpeakerX".  It then replies "All right, playing this on SpeakerX".  Then, three seconds later, it tells me "Sorry, I cannot do this with Youtube".  Even though I'm not using the Youtube app, I'm using the Youtube Music app.

If I'm using the touchscreen (which I don't want do be doing.  I'm in bed, not wearing my glasses) to transfer music: the following happens.  Either the speakers are not present in the menu (but the TV is!) or when using a different menu, they are present, but once I touch them they a) keep on displaying the circle icon indicating that it's loading, or b) open a visual onscreen google search and search for the name of the speaker (very weird!).

Transfering music between my three Mini 2's and Audio works perfectly. Transfering to the Hub 2 also flawlessly. But once it's playing on the Hub 2, the music is stuck there.  I cannot "transfer it away".  What does work, is transfering the music to the TV: It transfers the music to the TV using the Youtube Music app (the Youtube Music app starts on the TV, not the Youtube app).

I suppose this is like a very basic usage case, right?  People having the Hub next to their bed, using it to play music in the morning, and then getting out of bed and hearing the same music on other speakers in the house? Why is this impossible?

This is mere speculation, but I have the feeling that it has to do with the fact that the Hub is considered a video device, and the Mini and Audio are audio devices.  Transfering music from a video device to an audio device is appartently impossible (even though using the Youtube Music app).

Anyone else having this problem?

Hi kgatgmaildotcom,

Thanks for sharing details about the issue here. I know how challenging it is when you're having issues transferring media from your Google Nest Hub to other speakers. I'd love to help.

A few questions:

  • Is it working before?
  • Is there a video playing on your Nest Hub when you try to transfer it to another speaker?
  • Does it happen to other music services like Spotify or Pandora?
  • What is the current firmware version of your device?

Looking forward to your response.

Cheers,
Muddi

  • Is it working before?

No, it didn't.  Never has.  Not before factory resetting, not after.

  • Is there a video playing on your Nest Hub when you try to transfer it to another speaker?

No.  Obviously, there's a still image on the screen (as is the case with Youtube Music).  There is no video playing.  I've tried finding music videos - with moving video - in the app on the device while it's playing music, but as far as I know this isn't possible on youtube music. I've tried songs that have video's on regular youtube, but on Youtube Music they play with a still image.  In the top left of the screen, there's the red circular Youtube Logo followed by the word "Music".

When I try to transfer, It still says "okay, I'll play it on device x" and after a few seconds "This does not work with Youtube."

  • Does it happen to other music services like Spotify or Pandora?

No, Spotify works perfectly. It just works.

  • What is the current firmware version of your device?
    (translated from dutch)
    Firmwareversion system: 324896
    Firmwareversion cast: 1.56.324896

Hey kgatgmaildotcom,

To confirm, are you getting the same issue when asking your Nest Hub to play music on your speaker (Play music to <speaker name>)? Let's go ahead and factory reset your speaker to see if that fix the issue.

Let me know how it goes.

Cheers,

Muddi

> To confirm, are you getting the same issue when asking your Nest Hub to play music on your speaker (Play music to <speaker name>)?

No, that works.  It just doesn't work when I want to move/play music that is already playing on the Nest Hub

> Let's go ahead and factory reset your speaker to see if that fix the issue.
I will!  Can't probably do that today, but as soon as possible (not home, and I have 8 speakers/devices in total)

Hi kgatgmaildotcom,

Sounds like a good plan! You can try resetting 2 of your devices then see if it still have the same behavior when transferring music from one speaker to another.

Hi Muddi,

It has been working week for me, so I haven't found time to factory reset and test them yet.

I guess I'll be able to somewhere this week.

Thanks!

Hey, I've factory reset two nest mini speakers, and the nest hub itself.

The same problem persists: When I ask he Hiub (Youtube Music) to transfer to another device, it says it will.  But after a few seconds it says this is not  possible with YouTube.

Doesn't make a difference whether I transfer to the newly reset devices, or the devices I haven't reset.

Hi kgatgmaildotcom,

We appreciate your efforts. Just an added question: what happen when you transfer or move the music from a speaker to your Nest Hub (2nd gen)?

Cheers,

Muddi

"We appreciate your efforts. Just an added question: what happen when you transfer or move the music from a speaker to your Nest Hub (2nd gen)?"

That works.  It opens on the Nest Hub 2 in Youtube Music, as expected.  Then the same problem occurs. It's "trapped" there, and when I try tor transfer it back to a Speaker Mini, Speaker Hub or group again, it tells me:
"Okay, I'll play this on speaker x".  And after a few seconds: "This doesn't work with Youtube".

It does however work when I transfer it to my Chromecast Built-In Philips TV. It opens there on Youtube Music.

Okay, in regards to factory resetting, I've factory resetted the whole setup, in this order:

- Removed (unlinked) the tp link electrical plug from the home app
- Deleted my two peaker groups from the home app
- Unpaired my mini speaker stereo pair
- Removed my three rooms
- Removed the house
- Reset the three nest mini speakers to factory settings
- Reset the nest audio to factory settings
- Reset the nest hub 2 to factory settings
- Cleared the app data on my phone from the Home app
- Cleared the cache data on my phone from the Home app
- Removed the Home app from my phone
- Cleared the app data on my phone from the Youtube app
- Cleared the cache data on my phone from the Youtube app
- Cleared the app data on my phone from the Youtube music app
- Cleared the cache data on my phone from the Youtube music app
- Restarted my Modem/Router
- Restarted my phone
- Reset the three nest mini speakers to factory settings (for the second time)
- Reset the nest audio to factory settings (for the second time)
- Reset the nest hub 2 to factory settings (for the second time)

So, this seems to me that everything is fresh at this moment.

Then I've tried the following:
A.
1.  Install the Home app.
2.  Set up a single Google Nest Mini.
3. Install the Google Nest Hub.
4. Tried to transfer it for the Hub to the Mini. ---->  Problem still persists.
5. Remove rooms in Google Home app, Remove House in Google Home app, Clear Home app data, Clear Home app cache, uninstall Home app, Factory reset Google Nest Hub, Factory reset Google Nest Mini.

B.  (basicly the same thing, but now I'm installing the Hub first, and using a different Mini.)
1.  Install the Home app.
2. Install the Google Nest Hub.
3. Install a different Google Nest Mini.
4. Tried to transfer it for the Hub to the Mini. ---->  Problem still persists.
5. Remove rooms in Google Home app, Remove House in Google Home app, Clear Home app data, Clear Home app cache, uninstall Home app, Factory reset Google Nest Hub, Factory reset Google Nest Mini.

C.  (again, same thing, but now I'm installing the Hub first, and using the Nest Audio.)
1.  Install the Home app.
2. Install the Google Nest Audio.
3. Install the Google Nest Hub.
4. Tried to transfer it for the Hub to the Audio. ---->  Problem still persists.

I feel I've tried everything.   Can someone who actually owns both a Google Nest Hub 2 and a Mini or Audio confirm that this functionality is actually working for them?

I'm sure the typos are clear: (huib -> hub, peaker -> speaker, for -> from)
In point C, I've set up the Audio first, then waited about half an hour while testing that the Audio works perfectly, and then installed the Hub afterwards)

Hey kgatgmaildotcom,

I appreciate your efforts. Let's try to turn on song-only mode on the YouTube Music app. Follow the steps below or click this link for more steps.

  1. Open the YouTube Music app, and make sure you're signed into your YouTube Music Premium membership.
  2. Select your profile photo > Settings.
  3. Switch Don’t play music videos to the on position.
  4. Once done, check if you'll still have issues moving the song from Nest Hub (2nd gen) to speaker.

Keep us posted.

Cheers,

Muddi

Hi Muddi.  All songs say they are playing as "audio" on the top of the screen. The "video" option is grayed out.

Note that I don't have YouTube Music Premium. So there's no option to switch to video from the youtube music app, neither is there an option to turn on song only mode.  Song only mode is basicly on by default, since I'm not paying for a subscription.

Got it! Could you give us a sample of music that you're having issues moving to your Nest Hub? We'll see if we will be able to replicate the issue on our end.

Hey kgatgmaildotcom,

There's just one more steps that we want to try and we need your help. Let's go ahead and reset your Nest Mini and Nest Hub (2nd gen). Once done, set them up on a separate home structure then check if you can move the music by using the command: "Hey Google, move music to <name of speaker>"

Let me know the result.

Hey Muddi,

I've already tried this multiple times (factory reset, and made a completely new house) to no avail.  Using this exact same command as in your reply.

But maybe I'm misunderstanding:

- Do you want me to make an additional house while keeping the first? And placing both devices in the new house?

- Do you want me to make an additional house, and place each device in a different house?

Hey kgatgmaildotcom,

Sorry for the confusion. Please create an additional home structure on the Google Home app. Once done, reset your devices then set up the first device on your current home structure, then the other one in another home structure.

Okay, I'll do that as soon as possible!

In regards to your previous post:

With all music, obviously.  At the moment, I'm playing "Something Warm" by "No Spirit". (which I cannot transfer or move away from the Hub 2)

Hi kgatgmaildotcom,

Thanks for the additional info. Let us know once you tried the steps as I will keep this thread open for few more days.

Hi Princesss,

I understand that you're adamant in closing threads here.  But there's something as being too adamant.  It has only been one day (yesterday) after my last post.

I won't have time or be home until Sunday the 26th, I run an electronics store during the day, and have additional jobs during the night.

Furthermore, Muddi has also signalled they'll be trying to recreate the issue with the music provided, so I'm waiting for their reply as well.

The suggested issue of resetting devices, creating new homes, and setting them up again isn't something that is done in a few minutes, and repeatedly (each day) having to check to make sure this thread isn't locked randomly is costing us both valuable time.

As is clear from this thread, I've already put hours and hours into this issue, and I can assure you that if I don't do this in 4 days, I will do this in 5 or 6.

Please don't close this thread sooner than strictly needed.  I'll be here to do the suggested steps as soon as a normal busy working person is able to.

In this case, Sunday (European time)

Thanks.

Hi kgatgmaildotcom,

Hey Muddi,

I've done this, exactly as you told me.

- I've set up a new home structure, and reset/setup the hub in the new home. Then reset/setup the mini in the existing home.  The problem still persists:

hey Google transfer music to -> okay I'll transfer music to -> (after a few seconds) I cannot do this with YouTube (video?)

- Then, I did the same thing but reset/setup both the hub and the mini in the new home structure.  Problem still persists.

- Then, as some sort of ultimate solution, I erased everything. I got out an old phone and reset it (Samsung J4+), I created a new Google account. Reset my router. New home structure. Reset/Setup the Hub.  Reset/Setup the Mini.  The exact same problem still persists!

YouTube Music is acting as it is YouTube (video) on the hub 2:

- I can transfer to my Chromecast enabled tv, but not the Mini's or the Audio. If I tap the screen of the hub, and select "available devices" to transfer to, only the Chromecast enabled tv shows up.

- After accepting my vocal request to transfer, it tells me after a few seconds, that it cannot do this with YouTube (YouTube - not YouTube music).  Even though the hub screen clearly tells me I'm running YouTube Music

- The music on the hub stops after like 45 minutes or so. I can't confirm the time exactly, but this behaviour mimics how YouTube (video) works. The mini's and audio obviously don't do this.

- Other weird behaviour: sometimes a single song does go in video mode, with video.  Note that I didn't ask for this. If I tap the screen it still says YouTube Music.  The problem and behaviour is exactly the same, no matter the "mode".

- Commercials are always video.

So yeah, I'm very convinced that the problem lies with the concept that YouTube Music "is" YouTube (video). I realize that there's an option "don't play videos" available only to YouTube Music Premium users, but a) we don't know whether this solves the problem and b) I don't have YouTube Music Premium

Thanks!

Hey kgatgmaildotcom,

Please note that there are times that YouTube Music will play similar songs/music videos that are similar to what you request when you don't have a premium account. It is possible that some of the songs that you requested have videos that's why you can't transfer it to the speaker from the Nest Hub (2nd gen). Moving forward, we'll wait for you to fill out the form so we can further check what's going on with your device.

Cheers,
Muddi

Hi Muddi,

Note that I don't request these songs, they start by themselves. Even then, these songs (with video's) still show the red youtube icon, followed by "Music" on the top left when I tap the screen.  I'm sure it's clear that I'm very aware of the difference between audio and video and I'm testing this when playing Youtube Music without video.

I want to stress that the problem persists:
- When playing Youtube Music (without video)
- When playing Youtube Music (with video)
- After a fresh install (new home, new google account, new phone, reset router, reset to factory settings of hub and all other devices), immediately when playing Youtube Music (before it has played any accidental video)
- So basicly... always.

Muddi and Princesss:
I've filled in the form,

hoping for an answer, or at least the confirmation that this is normal behaviour:
That all Google Nest Hub 2d's do this (and that the description in the marketing
is wrong).
