Cant turn screen off while playing music/podcasts

Velvetrush

I just upgraded my nest mini to the hub v2. I like to listen to podcasts while I go to sleep but the display screen stays on the Spotify display. If I try and swipe back to the clock etc, the music stops playing. How is having a glowing screen in your face helping anyone sleep? How can I turn the screen off and and and still play my podcast?

Just got it myself and it seems that saying "Hey Google - screen off" works, but you have to tell it to start playing whatever it was again from your phone.  This also only works for the file currently being played, as it stops after the end of it (so no playlist).

Kindof disappointing restriction that seems pretty needless.

"Hey Google, screen off and play" seems to work in one command.

Doesn't work.

If I'm listening to a podcast on spotify, it will turn the screen off and pause the podcast.

I do what you suggest, as soon as it starts playing, the screen comes back on.

But google podcasts it will turn the screen off!

Mine used to play my podcast playlist and allow me to turn the screen off, but now for some reason, spotify podcasts force the screen to stay on, spotify music will allow me to turn the screen off and google podcasts allow me to turn the screen off.......

I've tried a variety of things but whenever I start playing my music/podcast again, the screen just returns to displaying the media screen. If I try and turn the screen off or swipe the screen away, it stops playing. For a device that boasts all its sleep Health features it's quite stupid. Lol.

This always used to work fine on radio streams, but stopped a couple of days ago. "Go home" or screen swiping now stops the stream when it once was ok.  "Resume" starts plating again, but then you're back to having the display on - utterly frustrating...

Any updates to this, anyone?

This is annoying the life out of me!!

Nope 🤨  I've abandoned any sleep sensing so I can turn the screen away from me. Such a disappointing issue.

I am. My daughter sleeps to ocean waves. There's ocean waves for ten hours. But it shows as a video and screen stays on for ten hours. Is that even Ok for the screen? I have tried playing on song mode but those are only an hour and despite me saying loop or repeat, Google Hub says "something went wrong"  and to try again later. It's not YouTube Music bc on my phone, iPad etc i can loop the same song all night without any issue.  As a result. Use the iPad and not the Google hub which is the main reason bought it.

If it's a video, you can't disable the display.

It will force stop the video.

It would be like playing a movie on your TV and turning it off and expecting the audio to continue

Until 2 days ago, I could turn my google hub max screen off while streaming podcasts on spotify, now as soon as I turn the screen off, my podcast will stop.

HOWEVER spotify music and google podcasts will allow me to turn the screen off, but podcasts on spotify force the screen on

I can recommend a jiffy padded envelope placed over the whole hub - not quite what was intended I'm sure, but unlikely to be broken by a software update...

Hahaha! Looks like that's the way forward!!

I’ve started telling my hub screen off and play. It turns the screen off and then resumes the podcast/song

Yeah. Looks like the function's back now, thankfuly.

What version is installed on your NestHub? Have you already received the new update?

Yes, the problem started after the newest update.

Reboot didn't work. The screen still doesn't turn on while being casted to.

say turn display off and unpause the music

This is what I am currently doing. A quick fix, but not a solution.

So I don't know if this is a fix or it was mentioned already but I have to use google podcasts for display off playback. It works like it should (you play podcast, ask google to turn off display and then podcast resumes after google stops talking). This does not work for Spotify unfortunately for me.

Mine worked up until 3 days ago.

Now podcasts on spotify force the screen on

I have the same issue since a couple of weeks, so annoying!

Same.

Worked fine then one day it just stopped working

Please Google we need a solution! I have tried everything. From a full reset to unlinking Spotify and relinking it after clearing cache, data and all that.

Clock view works with music but not with podcasts and it's infuriating!

I'm still having this issue on spotify - again, give us something because it's hard to use your device at all when simple things like this just suck.

Funny how about 6months ago this use to work! I would Always play sleep music at night on YouTube music and the display would automatically dim. Since then I have had issues with my premium subscription on the Google hub as it plays commercials as well!  Got on the phone with Google in the middle of the night but they couldn’t help, had to talk with someone at YouTube the next day but have not done so!  This “New” fix has screwed up all the greatness of having the hub!
