Casting icon gone from most apps

Monday morning we were able to cast media from any app on our phones or tablets to our Nest mini speakers (we have 2) or our TVs, like normal.  By Monday late afternoon, the casting icon was "missing" from most of the apps.  We use Pandora in our home like we drink water.  Its on constantly and it's always casted from someones app.  We do have it connected to our Google home account but it's my husbands account and he listens to it as work, so we can't listen to at home without using a different account, so we have to cast it.  After seeing that it was missing from the Pandora app, we looked at iHeart and the casting icon is there but when you touch it, it can't find any devices.  Same with Youtube and Youtube music - icon is there but can't find any devices.  We have 8 devices (phones, tablets) in our home that we have casted from in the past, and none of the 8 devices are able to cast to the Google home devices any longer.  I know Google home pushed out an update recently (Monday I think) and that has to be when it started.  Is anyone else having this problem and/or have a fix?

• It's not just one app. It's all the apps that we used to be able to cast from, and all the devices.  We have multiple models, android versions, etc - and NONE of them work.  All of them are unable to cast from any app.

• We ARE able to say "Hey Google, play Pandora" and it will play - it just won't allow us to cast to it.  Like I said earlier, when hubby is home, it's not a problem, but when he is gone, we need to be able to cast so that we can use a different Pandora account (we have 4).

• We've tried unplugging all the Google Home devices and re-powering them on with no luck.
• We've checked all the apps for updates - all up to date.  Even uninstalled and reinstalled a few just to check to see if that helped. It didn't.
• Everything is on the same wifi network

• The only thing I haven't done is uninstalled the Google Home app - I'm afraid to since everything in our home is connected.  And I don't think the app is the problem...

• I have even emailed Pandora support just to report the issue and they were very responsive. Obviously since it's not just their app, this isn't on their end - but thought I'd give it a shot.

• I sent feedback through the Google Home to report the issue, but I haven't heard back.

Any ideas?

This is not the experience we want you to have, let me help you. A few questions: were there recent changes made? Is casting not working on all your Nest Minis and your TV as well? Before, when your husband was not home, were you able to cast to your devices?


By the way, thank you for doing the steps before posting however, it would help a lot if you could do a sequential reboot isntead: 


  • Unplug the power cord of your router, followed by your Nest speakers, then your other casting devices.
  • Plug them back in after 3 minutes.
  • Restarting your phone might also help.


If the issue persists, reinstall the Google Home app. Devices linked to it will not be affected as long as you use the same email address when reinstalled. These are account based.
