Continuous Webcam Streaming to Nest Hub Max

Doogie
Community Member

Hello, after believing that a TP-Link Kasa camera was "Google Assistant Enabled" I purchased one. The use case was for streaming a constant view of a baby monitor on our Hub in the evening, leaving our TV, phones, computer, etc free for other tasks.

Although the streaming works fine it shuts down after 5-10 minutes and this is working "as designed" and confirmed by the manufacturer.

Your support pages list a number of makes of camera that would to with Nest Hub but I need a more granular level of detail to know which ones can keep a constant stream Vs which will time-out like my Kasa camera as it is not fit for purpose.

Could you please clarify what options I have as I believe the Nest camera would work but they are slightly more expensive than we were looking to spend.

Thank you

Hey all,

Sorry for the late reply. I wanted to follow up with you, as I did find an article with more details on 24/7 video history. At this time, I am not seeing any details on how to stream that continuously to your Hub. I know this is not the most ideal answer, and I will be sure to share this feedback with our Team. We are always looking to improve our products. Please let me know if you have any other questions from here, as I would be happy to take a closer look.

Best regards,

Jake

Thank you Jake but I don't think the article related to the issue I have raised. The camera is capable of streaming continuously as it does when you use the app from the vendor (in this case Kasa) but when you stream it through Google Hub the streaming only lasts about 5 minutes before cutting out.

I am looking for a video that will stream to the Hub continuously in real time, I am not worried about recording at all.

Hey RS4,

Thanks for reaching out.

Right now, you can only stream live video for up to 4 hours using the wired Nest cameras. If the Nest camera or doorbell is on battery power, it can only stream for up to 5 minutes. After 5 minutes, you needs to reactivate the live stream in the app to continue with the stream. Also, Google doesn't have any information about the stream duration for third-party cameras.

We're always looking for ways to improve and we'll take it as feedback. I also suggest that you send feedback using your devices by saying, "Hey Google, send feedback," or by following the steps on this link. Let me know if I can assist with anything else, otherwise I’ll be locking this thread after 24 hours.

Best,

Alex,

Why are you saying you are going to lock the thread?!? We haven't had a proper answer yet!

Thank you for the additional information above but it relates to Nest Cams, we need to understand what is it that is making a powered camera from a third party act like a battery powered Nest one, is it some sort of protocol they can change to fix this issue?

Hey Doogie,

While we can't provide any information about third-party camera streaming duration, it's best to coordinate with the partner app for additional details. For the Nest battery camera, the default event length is 3 minutes so streaming for more than that can cause a significant impact on the battery life of the camera.

Alex

Alex, to be honest, I'm not interested in the Nest cam, either read the original request and supply some advice around the point raised or pass this to someone that can. I'm now at the point where this has been going on for so long I'm giving up ... It's not a great customer experience from a forward looking company that should be able to give a technical response to inform their customers.

OK, you have successfully beaten me into submission and I just don't care any more so do what you want. What a pathetic excuse for customer service.
