Distorted audio on Google Nest speaker

Intermittently, the audio being streamed to the speaker (Spotify using Google Home app) goes from perfectly clear to distorted - the sound of a blown speaker. It will play that way for a period and then revert back to clear. There is no discernible pattern to this. I'm worried that something happened to the speaker during shipping that it may be a hardware issue, but the inconsistent nature makes me think software. Please help. Thanks.

Hi rsat998,

Thanks for reaching out to our community.

I’m sorry to hear that your Google Nest speaker intermittently goes from perfectly clear to distorted, the sound of a blown speaker. Thank you for letting us know important details, such as that it is playing distorted for a period and then reverting back to clear, and it is happening when you stream Spotify using the Google Home app. No worries, help is here.

To provide you with better assistance, I would appreciate it if you answered the following questions:

  • Could you please confirm which Google Nest speaker model and generation you have?
  • Do you experience the same inconvenience when you try to stream other apps?
  • Do you experience the same inconvenience when you get the response to your commands? Example: "Hey Google, what time is it?" Or: "Okay Google, what's the weather?" Or, "Okay, Google, will it rain tomorrow?".
  • What troubleshooting steps have you taken with your Google Nest speaker?
  • Can you describe the status of the 4 LED lights? (Please refer to this article for reference: Google Nest and Google Home device LED lights
  • Has the device been dropped or knocked over?
  • Have you tried connecting the Google Nest speaker to a different power source?
  • Have there been any recent changes to your environment, such as a change in Wi-Fi network or recent outages?
  • Are you using an Android or iPhone device to set up your Google Nest speaker?
  • Could you kindly check for wireless interference near the TV, such as walls and floors, Wi-Fi-enabled devices, other electronics, cordless phones, baby monitors, mirrors, radios, microwaves, Bluetooth devices, and wireless video equipment?
  • What is the distance between your Google Nest speaker and the router?
  • Is your Google Nest speaker linked to a WiFi network operating at 2.4 or 5 GHz?
  • Is your Google Home app updated?
  • Is your Spotify app up to date?
  • Are you using the Spotify Premium app?
  • What country are you located in?
  • What's the Google Nest speaker firmware version?

Thank you for your time and attention. I look forward to your response.

Best regards,

Virna
