Downtime filters do not work

I have asked this question before but this system never lets me respond to my own posts for some reason. I am extremely frustrated with this system. I have several devices, including Nest Hub displays and a couple of LinkViews (I know the LinkView is no longer supported, and it is not a Google product, but I am experiencing the issue with the Nest Hubs as well). It started when she got her a phone and it was added to the account. All devices are up to date. She is 11 years old and I do not want her on the displays in the middle of the night. We have had them since 2019. My original post was:

I have several Google Display Devices. I also have a couple Nest Minis. I have gone through and set up downtime for everyone and I have set up parental controls to prevent my daughter from accessing smart devices at night. I have also disabled video playback for everyone and all the smart devices because my kids will just sit there and play videos all day on the devices. Unfortunately, even though my daughter's profile says that she has a down time and that she is not allowed to access videos, she can play whatever she wants whenever she wants. The system does show her initial on the screen when she speaks to the display. When down time is on my husband can still have access to everything and I cannot but my daughter can and my son can't. So downtime only affects myself and my son. It would be nice if downtime only affected my children. My daughter is under 13 and my son is over 13. Again it's my daughter who can access everything but the system lets me block my son. No one but my daughter can play videos even though the default settings is no one can play videos and they are blocked through parental controls. This is excessively frustrating and I don't know what to do about it.

I have screenshot the settings. The custom days are every day of the week (the default choices are only school nights, weekdays or weekends so I had to do a custom schedule for every day). Again, her initial appears in the display so the display knows it is her talking. She can play videos at midnight. I don't know why YouTube settings should be pertinent as all videos are listed as disabled. She still plays YouTube videos on all of the displays.

Information from one of my hubs. Forgot to add this. This is the first time I have been able to reply to a post.

Hi BobsMom,

Thanks for following up!

I understand how frustrating it is when parental controls and downtime settings on your Nest Hub aren't working correctly, especially when your daughter can still access content during downtime. I appreciate you detailing the steps you've already taken to resolve the inconvenience.  Don’t worry, I’m here to help you.

According to the information you’ve provided, I recommend you to verify the following conditions to trigger the downtime settings on your Nest Hub for your daughter:

  1. Make sure that you are using the latest version of the Family Link app  and the Google Home app.
  2. Check if you linked a supervised Google account for a child under 13 (or the applicable age in your country) to your Assistant-enabled devices. You can find detailed instructions in the following Google Help Center article: Let your child use Google Assistant on your devices.
  3. Check if there’s an existing account on your daughter’s mobile device, and remove it.  Here is a helpful Google Help Center article to learn more about removing any existing accounts on the device.
  4. Follow the steps provided in this Google Help Center article to add a new account to the device.
  5. When you're asked to sign in with your Google Account, tap Create account. If you can't find "Create account," tap “More options.” then select the option “For my child.”
  6. Enter your child's name, birthday, gender, email address, and password.
  7. Follow the instructions to sign in with your own Google Account, provide parental consent, and pick your child's settings.

The previous instructions for adding and removing accounts on the device will vary. If they don't work, search your device's help center for more information.

Please let me know how it goes.

Best regards,

Virna

  • It's a supervised account. It's linked through the family link app (which according to the Google Play store is the updated version - Home is updated too). The phone she has was new when we created her account. I had her use her phone to train her account to her voice and the displays recognize her when she speaks to them. I was going to add a screenshot of the Family Link app with her information on it to show that it's set up as a child account but I evidently can't do that when I'm mobile.
