Family Spotify Accounts Not Working for Each Kids Bedroom

Halfmagic3

So I saw a lot of posts on this exact issue, but absolutely no resolution. I pay for a premium Spotify Family account, where mine is the “main” account but each of my children and husband have their own account, as “sub accounts” under mine.

I am sick and tired of my kids playing music on their home Nests, which each have in their bedrooms, and yanking me from MY Spotify account. One child is 12, the other 6. Obviously the 6 year old doesn’t have email accounts or other devises. I am paying a hefty monthly fee with Spotify to have a FAMILY account and I also purchased 2 minis and 4 Nests for my home, but my kids can’t listen to their own accounts!? Seems I have spent enough money with both companies that this should be plausible. I am exhausted of my poor kids stopping my music and podcasts while I am driving but I am PAYING out the wazoo for their own accounts!

How has this not been addressed Google!? Seems the last post I can find on this topic was in 2021 and there was zero fix or work around for it.

Ok so, although I was able to eventually find a work around, no… my question was not appropriately answered. What seems to be the issue is that Spotify or Google casting devises, do not allow for a Spotify Kids account (which is a sub account within the family premium membership on Spotify). I believe this has to do with it being a “childrens account.”

what has to happen, and this was one hell of a lengthy process (like literally, find yourself at least half a day to do this), you MUST create a gmail.com mail account for all your kids; do not make them a restricted kids account. What you are doing is setting up a “dummy account.” Remove the kids speaker from the family household in the main Google Home app. Get the kids the Google Home application for their phone, and YES your child must have their own devise they use! This was another very tricky part and the majority of young kids do NOT and should NOT have their own devise. Sadly, mine has her own iPad Pro because of home learning during Covid. *Insert eye roll*. My older child did have a cell phone, so that wasn’t as difficult. But I put the Google Home app on my 6 year olds iPad. Go in to Google Home and create the kid a separate account for their room speaker only. Sign them up with Google Home app, with the dummy kids gmail email you just created. Then go to your personal phone (the Google home “master account”) and Add a Family member. Add the kids new dummy email and send the email. Go back to your child’s devise (do not respond to the invite email on your devise as many parents have their child’s email account plugged in to their phones/iPads, it won’t work, it recognizes the devise). Once the child’s email account is recognized and accepted in to the master homes account, you can easily go through the steps of adding the personalization to the child’s bedroom speaker.

However, be forewarned that there is NO work around for a child’s Spotify kids account from the Spotify Kids app most kids have. You have to create a new regular Spotify family member with that dummy email, WITHIN SPOTIFY TOO, in order for this to all work. I removed her kids profile and made her a regular Spotify account as a family member. I added the explicit and bad content filer from her settings within Spotify. You can do that! It works fine for me now and it had her go through the steps of the speaker recognizing her own voice, she can now control it. It now also prevents my Spotify music from being stopped when she wants to play on her speaker.

Think of the kids bedroom speaker as needing it’s own totally separate account to function for the child, and even recognize the child’s voice, and not interfere with the master homes linked media accounts.

Hey Halfmagic3,

Thanks for sharing details about the issue here, and apologies for the late response. To confirm, how many accounts are linked on the Google Home/Nest device? For the kids to play music on their own Spotify account, they should have their own email address link as a home member on the Google Home app. Each home member will have the ability to link their music service account. For more information, please visit this link.

For younger kids that is below 13 yrs. of age, it is best to set up a child account for them to maximize the features of Google Assistant on your devices. Click here to learn more.

Hope this helps.
