Google Assistant speakers cut off news announcements

BradBazley
Community Member

Multiple Google Assistant devices in our household cut off news announcements after 10-30s of playback.

We've tried the following:

  1. Removing/re-ordering news sources
  2. Rebooted all devices
  3. Rebooted the WiFi network
  4. Reset devices to defaults
  5. Added new devices

The issue continues to intermittently affect all devices after 6-8mo of experiencing the issue.

We trigger the routine by saying "Good morning" or "What's the news", the first 2-3 news sources cut off abruptly, then gradually other news sources play in full.

Hello @BradBazley

Thank you for posting in the community.
I appreciate the detailed information about the issue you're experiencing with your Google Assistant devices.

I understand the frustration of having news announcements cut off prematurely. To help me investigate the issue further, please provide the following information:

  • Google Assistant Device Models: Please specify the exact models of your Google Assistant devices (e.g., Nest Audio, Nest Hub).
  • Network Setup: Are you using Wi-Fi or Ethernet for your Google Assistant devices?
  • What do you mean when you say "removing or reordering news sources"? Are you referring to household routines?

While I gather more information, you can try the following troubleshooting steps:

  1. Check for updates: Ensure your Google Home app is running the latest version.
  2. Clear Cache and Data: Clear the cache and data for the Google Home app.
  3. Test a Different Wi-Fi Network: If possible, try connecting your Google Assistant devices to a different Wi-Fi network to isolate the issue.

Please help me with the information I asked for. You can also try the steps above. Thank you.

All the best,
Jorge

Hey Jorge,

This is occurring on multiple devices, including:

  • 2 x Google Nest Mini
  • 1 x Sonos One with Google Assistant enabled
  • 2 x Sonos Roma with Google Assistant enabled
  • 1 x JBL Link 20 Voice-activated speaker

We're using 3 x Nest WiFi Pro (G6ZUC) running version 3.73.406133 in mesh mode.

There is no other WiFi network to associate the devices to, but all devices have been fully updated and power-cycled multiple times over the past 8-12mo this issue has occurred.

Hi there!

It's frustrating that despite numerous troubleshooting steps, the issue persists across multiple devices. The intermittent nature and the gradual improvement after initial cut-offs suggest a potential network or Google Assistant service-related problem.

While we can help you with your Google Nest devices, we won't be able to provide you with the appropriate instructions with the other devices, but let us help you getting your devices working back for you!!

Check for Google Assistant Updates:

  • Ensure all Google Assistant devices are up-to-date.
  • Check for any Google Assistant app updates on your phone.

Isolate the Network:

  • Temporarily disable any network extenders or mesh points to see if the issue improves.

Verify DNS Settings:

  • Check your router's DNS settings and ensure they are correct. Consider using a public DNS like Google's (8.8.8.8) or OpenDNS.

Check for Interference:

  • Move your Google Assistant devices away from potential interference sources like cordless phones, microwaves, or other electronic devices.

Factory Reset a Single Device:

  • Perform a factory reset on one device to rule out a device-specific issue. If the problem persists, it's likely not a device issue.

By systematically going through these steps, you can hopefully identify the root cause of the issue and find a solution. Please keep me updated on your progress.

Regards,

Brandon.
