Google Home Devices Not Working Properly

squarerootof9

I've come to expect our Google Home devices (a Nest Mesh Wifi system with two hubs, a Nest Display Max, two Google Home displays and one Nest Speaker) to fritz out about once every couple of weeks. One of the connected devices just stops responding, usually to light control, and a simple reset of the device and a lot of patience will resolve the issue. When this happens, the app on our iPhones will usually control things without an issue.

However, in the last week, the entire house has gone haywire.

Every room, every device has become incredibly unstable. Even after resetting each device by unplugging for a minute then rebooting, the lights in our home do not respond. Last night, the problem reached a climax when I gave it a voice command and there was no response, I tried my phone, and there was no response. Then, a full thirty minutes later, the two inputs took effect in quick succession.

I'll add one more odd detail. My Nest speaker seems to consistently disconnect itself from the Nest Mesh. A voice command in a nearby room will cause it to report "I am no longer connected to the internet."

I suspect this is all related, but I cannot find a solution.

Has anyone else experienced this? And, what causes these intermittent issues between the devices and the things they control? How do I get the system to be stable again?

I wish I had an answer for you. I feel like I have a much less complex network set up (2 mini's, one Lenovo clock radio, and 3 smart plugs). Besides the outlets ( which generally work without a hitch), I primarily rely on the Nest Mini in my kitchen, which I have paired with a Harmon Kardon Invoke speaker, bc it offers much better sound quality than the little nest speaker.  Here are the issues I run into:

  1. When things are working (connectivity exists, and I'm able to specify the HK speaker as the default player from within the Home app), I have to reset the default to the HK every time I stream anything, and then have to physically adjust the volume on the HK.
  2. Very often, the HK won't respond to the default setting, despite showing in the Home app as paired. Sometimes, even when Home shows the HK as the default under "Audio" in Home, it still plays through the mini's speaker.
  3. For whatever reason, the Nest Mini that I have in my kitchen often gets dropped from my Home group, and I have to rest the whole thing.

I really enjoy the potential offered by the Google devices, but it's frustrating as heck to have them not working half the time. I wonder if I need to replace my home wifi router, due to age.

Hope you get some useful responses.

Hi Jake. Nothing changed on this end. NestMini will connect and stream, but I have to reset the default playback speaker to my HK Invoke speaker every time. Then, once it's connected, it will disconnect frequently.

Hey Expaladin,

I am sorry to hear about the one speaker still having trouble. Let's jump in and see if we can get the issue resolved. Do you mind me asking if you have already tested the mesh connection? Is the one speaker showing as a "weak" point? I did find an article that may be of some use. Please let me know if that helps out.

Best regards,

Jake

Hey Expaladin,

I am truly sorry to hear about all the trouble you are running into here. 3 hours is quite some time to be waiting for the reset. Please let me know once you have tested the mesh connection, so we can ensure the device is working properly with the other devices in your home.

Best regards,

Jake

Thanks, Jake.

Honestly, it's not helping that Google has multiple names for its devices, and seems to use them interchangeably in documentation. So let's start over to make sure we're on the same page.

I have a standard ethernet DSL service. That is connected to my house's wifi router, which is a D-Link DIR-645, which broadcasts the wifi signal for the whole house.

Connected to this network are 3 primary devices, 3 smart outlets, one Roku box, and one RoKu TV. The outlets have worked more or less without incident since being set up over a year ago, and TV connections are solid, with the occasional dropped connection.

I have 2 Google minis, One is a MiniHome, and the other is a NestMini. I also have a basic Lenovo clock radio that is Google compatible. In Home, under settings, under Wifi, it simply lists my home wifi name. There are no options for testing or anything else. I don't know what the difference is between Nest Wifi and Google Wifi, and I see never heard of "points" before today.

Neither of my Google minis have ethernet ports. They are both simple, round devices that resemble half-flattened muffins, with power cords, that connect to the D-Link home wifi. One of the devices is intended to autopair with an HK Invoke wireless speaker for playback; however, as reported, this connection often drops during streaming sessions, and I have to re-pair the device with every new session. This process sometimes works, oftentimes doesn't, and I haven't been able to determine any standard, repeatable way to pair the desired output speaker without random results.

It's more than frustrating. "Plug and play" is supposed to be just that. This isn't that. Are my Google devices obsolete? If so, why? Do I need a new router? Very confused.

Thank you.
