Google Home Removed My Devices From Rooms

TE5LA
Community Member

I've had a lot of issues with Google Home since purchasing four devices, my main one a Display model. This morning, my routine for waking up, setting the lights, weather report, etc. did not work. Then I came home and asked Google to set the lights to a certain level and it responds "There are no dimmable lights on the system", which is crazy because I've had them for several years.

So I open the Home app and discover that 95% of my devices have been removed from their respective rooms and some rooms have been deleted. This is probably about 10 devices, so I have to go through each one and "move" them back to their rooms. This explain why my morning routine did not work. There is no user on the system other than myself, so they weren't deleted here.

This system has far too many problems and nobody EVER replies to any of my posts. Is this not an official Google forum? If it is, I want Google people to reply.  I also have some tips on operational changes:

Can you make an option so the thing doesn't talk so much? It is annoying hearing everything repeated when it isn't necessary. Yes, I have the option selected to talk less, but it isn't enough. Does anyone really need a verbal confirmation when asking that a light, a fan, and air conditioner that is in the same room be turned on? It should be pretty obvious. Confirmations are needed only when something needs confirming, I'd think. Also, why confirm that something isn't on when a routine runs and attempts to turn it off? If my TV is already off when I got to bed and my routine has "turn off TV" in it, why have the device say "The TV is not on"?  This is just elementary stuff.

And when I set a timer for some task, does it really need to say "Okay, setting a timer for one hour and fifteen minutes for dinner and that's starting now"?  Of course it is starting now. Would you ever want a timer set to start sometime later? No. So why not just "One hour and fifteen minute timer for dinner set"?

Also, why can't we get information on timers on other devices or set timers for certain devices? An Amazon Alexa can stop a timer from any device. Are you saying you can't make this happen? You should also be able to hear a timer on other devices, why not, if I'm in the kitchen, can't I say "Hey, Google, set a one hour timer and copy to the bedroom"?  Or even, "Set a timer and copy to all rooms"? Such potential is being wasting here.

So this is a community forum where most of us are other community members trying to help each other, and it's a super busy one as well.  Honestly, since I have joined I spend at least 2 hours each day on here answering questions, and I don't get all of them for sure.

I read through your previous posts just to be sure I was updated on what's happening with your setup, and it is really strange you are right.  I am going to skip past the suggestions that you have made (they are good ones, and I agree with you, things like timers should be accessible on all devices).   As for the responses, I found that if I am asking in the same room (IE lights in the master bedroom from the bedroom nest speaker), it does not verbally respond, it would only respond if I am asking a device in another "room".

For your devices suddenly leaving rooms from your home, that is really odd.  You said the devices are still in your Google home app, but just not assigned to rooms?  My first thought is a wifi issue, either a weak connection, or interference from other wireless networks or devices.  Can I ask, what type of router are you using?  Is it located in the centre of your home?

Thanks, I have a Netgear Nighthawk R7300 router that is about 10 feet from my Google Display in direct line of sight. A weak WiFi signal should not make devices disappear from rooms. I have had more strange things like my morning alarm not occurring on my Google Home, yet sounding on my Android phone. I didn't have an alarm set on my phone for that time.

Tonight my Display went bonkers and suddenly started displaying nature pictures and would not respond to any voice commands. I unplugged it momentarily and then it made me go through the entire initial setup again. Now it's working but still has the nature pictures.

I've also had routines that usually work but sometimes it will just skip certain devices in the routines. At other times it will refuse to control certain devices and claim they are not connected even though they show up in the Home app and I can even control them through the app, yet cannot do anything by voice commands.

To be honest, I'm not sure I made the right decision to replace all my Alexa devices with Google Home. Some of these issues I am thinking are caused by the individual device companies, perhaps due to their servers not being active at given times. I hate that these "Smart" systems rely on Internet connection to the outside world because this is a disaster waiting to happen. Obviously to get things like information and weather, you would need this, but it shouldn't be necessary for home automation. If it isn't already done, home weather stations should be able to link to these too and that wouldn't require external Internet.

If this is only volunteers then I understand if I don't get replies but a company as large as Google should have an official line of support. I appreciate your attempt in helping in this matter.

I'm going to escalate this conversation as well, as besides factory resetting everything, deleting the home entirely, and starting from scratch , I can't think of where to go.   The reality is smart home devices are very complex and things can break very easily.  I can't tell you how many times my hue stuff has gone haywire(still to this day, it shows offline in the hue app, yet I can control them in Google home no issue).

I have the Goggle Home Display in my bedroom. Since  I've owned it, I've had a routine that wakes me on work mornings with a voice alert, gives the days weather, and turns on some lights at low settings.

So this morning, there is no voice wakeup. The lights come on and the alarm in my cellphone goes off, which was very confusing, because the only alarm I have set on it is to alert me when to walk out the door and leave for work. I jumped up to find that it was not that alarm but an alarm for the same time my Display was supposed to tell me to wake up.

How weird is this? I didn't set a phone alarm for this time. What is going on?

Hey there,

Thanks to Ashepherdson for escalating this to me, I apologize TESLA that you've been having issues with your smart devices and the connections but I'm happy to look into this for you.

There have been some issues going on with different manufacturer's lightbulbs getting disconnected from the Google Home and I have sent this information over to our engineering team and they ask that you provide them feedback through the Google Home app to them. They suggest including the keywords, "#Lights" along with the name brand of the lights and a short description of what you're encountering.

To address the issues with your devices, I would suggest a few things. Uninstalling and reinstalling the app, unlinking and relinking the devices back to the app, and as a last resort, doing a factory reset on the device that you're having issues with.

In regards to anything about the Google Assistant specifically, I would suggest reaching out to the Google Assistant Forums

I appreciate you taking your time to let us know about what changes or features you would like to see. Feedback like this helps us constantly improve our products and services by knowing what we are doing right and what we can work on.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Best regards,
Garrett DS

After the unit would not function to my voice at all, I unplugged it for ten seconds and after plugging it back in, I was forced to go through the initial setup again, the complete setup.

A lot of options in the settings were not there before so I suspect an update is responsible for clearing all my settings and removing devices from rooms.
