My bedtime “Routine” has always consisted of: I say bedtime, google assistant asks what time should I set the alarm, and I say the time. She confirms, and the sleep sounds start to play.
Lately though, after the assistant asks me what time I want for the alarm and I tell her, she says “sorry, that can’t be done on this device.” Then the sleep sounds start.
Then I separately say “hey google, set an alarm for [the time I just said] tomorrow morning.” And the assistant says “you already have an alarm set for that time.”
What is going on here? It’s been like this for over a week now and I even did a factory reset and it’s still the same.

Hello Emburd,
Thanks for posting and I'm sorry for this experience.
Please inform me if Google Home is setting up your alarm even when it says it can't be done. If it does, try to rename the device by following these steps: open the Google Home app > Tap on the device icon > Choose the Settings at the upper right > Device information > Name > Select Edit then Save.
Let me know how it goes.
Thanks,
Lovely

Hi - thanks for the idea. Unfortunately it didn’t work. Any other ideas?

Hey everyone,
Go ahead and try changing the Assistant language to either English US, English CA or English UK. Reboot your Google Home or Nest devices for a minute and let me know how it goes.
Best,
Lovely

Hi all,
Please let me know if this is happening for both ready-made and custom routines. Give us the Cast firmware version of your Google Home and Nest devices so we can look into this further.
Cheers,
Lovely

We tried changing the language with no success. Currently set to English -Australian
For us it’s the Goodnight /sleep sounds routine that makes the error. I’ll add the alarm is set, but the Assistant apologies and says it can’t be done.
FWIW The device in my room happily sets an Alarm based on a “wake me up at”…
Cast Firmware
Device 1 : (Nest mini) : 1.56.348702
Device 2 : Mesh node 1.56.315675

Hey there Forfeitattic,
I just want to clarify that the "set an alarm" and "create an alarm" commands are not working, but the "wake me up at" is all good. What is the exact message that you are getting?
Best,
Lovely

Hi
Actually the commands work fine - but immediately after acknowledging the command it apologises and says the request can’t be done. Yet the alarm is set. So the assistant contradicts itself.

Adding to my comments above - I tried Google good morning just now. The assistant added a “Sorry that can’t be done on this device, have a wonderful day” inbetween the weather and the ‘latest news’. it then carried on with the stories. Very unusual.

Same here. I heard the same apology on both my kids Google Nest Mini’s tonight after they’re said “Ok Google, Goodnight”. The assistant asks what time for the alarm, they reply, it then confirms and apologises, then sleep sounds start.
Our home has a Nest Hub in the kitchen and 4 minis, plus a 2 node mesh wifi. It was working flawlessly until a few months ago. Everything is about 18 months old.

I get this error in the morning after "Hey Google, Good Morning." - It starts ok, then "Sorry, that can't be done on this device" - then it plays the news and weather. Any clue what it's trying to do, that it can't?

Exactly the same as Oldrogoman. For the past few weeks the Google Home in my bedroom does this and I got the same thing when testing it on our Google Nest Hub and another point.
