Google Mini Not Doing What it's Told

gordon861

I have three Google Mini's 'Upstairs', 'Kitchen' and 'Office'.  'Office' and 'Kitchen' are also in a group as 'Downstairs'.

From today ...

When I say "OK Google, Play LBC on Office Speaker", it replies "I think you want to play radio is that correct", respond with 'yes' and it then says "Playing LBC on Downstairs" and then proceeds to do so.

If I just say "OK Google, Play LBC" it also responds with "Playing LBC on Downstairs".  It also does the exact same thing and plays on 'Downstairs' when I use the command with the 'Upstairs' unit.

Has Google broken or changed something again?  It feels like the command for playing a radio station has been messed with again.

I have tried powering down the devices and it is doing the same thing.  I can 'cast' to each device individually using TuneIn, but that is not really a sustainable solution.

I have looked at the Home App on my phone and it is understanding every word I am saying, it is just ignoring part of it and doing what it wants.

Any ideas?

Your Google Nest or Home speaker or display is powered on and plugged into a wall outlet.
The microphone isn't muted.
For Google Home: On the back of the device, touch the microphone mute button. Your Assistant will say whether the microphone is muted.
For Google Nest Mini (2nd gen) and Google Home Mini (1st gen): On the side of the device, toggle the mic switch. Your Assistant will say whether the microphone is muted.
For Google Nest Audio: On the back of the device, next to the power cord, toggle the mic switch. Your Assistant will say whether the microphone is muted.
For Google Nest displays: On the back of your display, use the switch to turn on the microphone. Your Assistant will say whether the microphone is muted.
The LED dots on top of your speaker or display will spin or blink when you say “Ok Google” or "Hey Google."
If your Assistant answers other questions, try to ask the unanswered question in a different way.

Hope You Find This Useful,
Peter

Well thanks for the reply, but obviously the device is powered and the microphone isn't muted or it wouldn't be doing anything when asked, rather than just doing the wrong thing.

Today it has improved a bit and will now only play on the device that I am next to, but it still is asking "I think you want to play radio is that correct".

So I think I am going to put this down to Google playing silly buggers and not bothering to tell anyone about it.

Hi folks,

Thanks for bringing this up.

Has anyone here already tried performing a complete reset to their speakers after noticing these changes?

Best,

Princess

Don't bother, it doesn't fix it. The problem is up in the cloud, something Google have broken - if it is related to the patent infringement they lost then it won't be coming back either.

It's stopped working for me too, you just can't tell a group to play anything. Instead you can tell one device to play something then 'move the music to GROUP'. Annoying but seemingly normal now for Google to not test updates.

I will try that later to see if I can get that to work.

Never got the transfer to work ...

However, tonight I just tried it again on a whim  ... and it's working again as it did previously.  I do wish they would stop breaking these, it really feels like they are making these work worse in the hope that you might buy the newer versions sometimes.

Hello everyone,

Thanks for the update and I'm sorry for this experience, @gordon861. We just want to make sure everything's covered with your Google Home speakers. We'll also take note of your feedback about the released updates and raise it further with our team.

@RMuser, I want to check if playing music to your speaker group and moving music from one speaker to another are now working. Let me know if the issue still persists.

Regards,
Lovely

Yes, thank you. Music can once again be played directly to groups, so the issue appears to be solved.

Hi, yes, it is now playing the radio on groups as expected.

Not sure how 'transfer/move' is supposed to work, if I try to tell the mini to "transfer radio to kitchen" it responds with "OK, I'll play it on kitchen speaker", it then goes quiet for about five seconds and then the radio fades back up on the office speaker only.

Hey folks,

Thanks for the update! We're glad to hear that the issue is now fixed!

@gordon861: The command that you are using is correct. Could you try the other commands like, "Move the music to <device name>" and "Cast to <device name>" Let's see if the music will play on your preferred speaker.

Cheers,

Muddi

When I try 'move to kitchen speaker' or 'cast to kitchen speaker', it comes back and says "Alright I'll play it on kitchen speaker" stays silent for five seconds and then fades the volume back up.

However, if I try 'cast to downstairs' (the group that includes both office and kitchen), it then says "Alright I'll play it on kitchen speaker" and just does it.

Hey gordon861,

Got it! There's a delay when using the first command. How far is the kitchen speaker from the router?

Sorry you misunderstand, it goes quiet and then fades the volume back up on the original speaker, it never transfers the stream to the second speaker.  So playing on OFFICE tell it to move to KITCHEN, it goes quiet says OK and then a few seconds later fades back up the volume of OFFICE again and plays nothing on KITCHEN.

BTW both units are about 5m from the router and have a good signal.

Hi gordon861,

Thanks for clarifying the issue. Can we try moving the speakers near the router and see if you'll still have the same issue.

Cheers,

Muddi

I can 'move the music' to another speaker or group but if I ask one speaker to play something on another (or using Google assistant on my phone) I only get 'sorry I don't understand'.
