Google Mini speaker turning my light on when I ask it to set a sleep timer for my media

This has only recently started happening. Maybe a couple of weeks ago.

I'm using my Mini home speaker to play a radio station or a sportify playlist and I say "OK, Google. Set sleep timer for 10 minutes", and 90% of the time Google will respond "(Speaker name) will stop playing in 10 minutes"

10% of the time it replies "OK, I'll turn off X lights for 10 minutes".

I'm sure that I'm that I'm saying the exact same thing, and annunciating it the same way, but I get these two very different responses.

Any ideas?

Hi zombiesaaargh,

Thank you for posting in the community. I'm sorry that you're having troubles with the Google Mini speaker not doing what you want when requesting a sleep timer. I understand how frustrating this can be. I'm here to help.

For your concern, please try the below steps:

  • Unplug your Google Nest or Home speaker or display. Wait for 10 seconds, then plug it back in. Wait for the device to reboot, then try to ask the Assistant your question again.

  • Reboot your modem and router.

  • If there are nearby devices that may cause interference, such as microwave ovens, wireless speakers, baby monitors, Wi-Fi routers, and other devices using the 2.4 GHz band, try to move your speaker or display to a different room.

  • If you get these errors frequently, try to move your speaker or display closer to your router.

  • If the issue continues, Factory reset Google Nest or Home speakers or displays.

Let me know how it goes and keep me posted.

Regards,

Kevin

Google, please stop these patronising bit posts.

Turning it off and back on again isn't the solution. This happens on all my devices,

Having the same issue, and started approximately the same time. The response from Kevin makes no sense, what used to occur when asking assistant to ‘set sleep timer for 30 minutes’ now results in random turning on lights instead.

Kevin is a bot, this is a standard canned answer that gets posted if there are no other responses to a question.

I had the same thing when asking why certain radio stations on Spotify suddenly returned kqed rather than the one I asked for.
