Google Nest Hub 2 not playing Spotify music on default speaker

My Google Nest Hub 2 is connected to my JBL soundbar as the default speaker. I used to be able to use Google assistant to play music (Spotify is the default service) on the JBL. Recently when I use "Hey Google", the nest will broadcast "playing music on JBL" but nothing happens. Now, I can play Spotify using voice command on the Hub's speaker; I can play Tunein radio using voice command on JBL. I can also cast Spotify from my iPhone to the JBL. So it feels like there is nothing wrong with Spotify or JBL, both are definitely linked to the Hub. I've tried rebooting the Hub, linking and unlinking Spotify but nothing works. Please help!

- yes Google Home app on mobile is updated

- yes Spotify in mobile is updated.

- yes "hey Google play 987Fm" via Nest works with TuneIn playing on JBL

-  yes I'm on Spotify premium

- yes JBL firmware is updated

- Nest and JBL is connect to 2.4ghz and mobile connected to 5.0ghz of the same wifi network.

- No change to wifi

- Nest software 66.68.731513350

- Nest is on Chromecast firmware 3.76.463359

(This was reported but there was no help after I posted more information)

Hi yowstery,

Thanks for reaching out here in the community! I understand that your Google Nest Hub (2nd gen) isn’t playing Spotify on your JBL soundbar, especially since it was working before. I appreciate you for trying some important troubleshooting steps already. No worries, I’d be happy to help with this!

To better investigate this situation, I’d like to ask for the following information:

  • When did you first notice this issue starting?
  • Did anything change around the time the issue began, such as a software update on your Nest Hub or a new device being added to your setup?
  • Is this behavior consistent or intermittent?
  • Does this problem occur with all types of Spotify content, like specific songs, playlists, or podcasts, or only with certain ones?
  • Could you tell me the exact command you're using when you try to play music on your JBL speaker?
  • Does the command work when you say “Play Spotify on (JBL speaker name)” instead of relying on default speaker routing?
  • Are you able to manually cast Spotify from the Nest Hub's screen to your JBL speaker without any problems?
  • What happens if you temporarily set a different speaker (not your JBL) as the default speaker for your Nest Hub? Does Spotify play correctly on that device when using voice commands?
  • Do other users in the household get the same behavior with their voice and account?
  • Do other music services, like YouTube Music or Apple Music, work correctly with voice commands on your JBL speaker through your Nest Hub?
  • If you ask the Nest Hub to play music on itself, and then manually cast that to JBL, does the transition work smoothly?

I look forward to your response.

Best regards,

Jenniffer

  • When did you first notice this issue starting? About half a year ago?
  • Did anything change around the time the issue began, such as a software update on your Nest Hub or a new device being added to your setup? No, nothing's change.
  • Is this behavior consistent or intermittent? Consistent. "Hey Google, play xxx on JBL" does not work like it used to.
  • Does this problem occur with all types of Spotify content, like specific songs, playlists, or podcasts, or only with certain ones? Yes, the problem persists for all Spotify content.
  • Could you tell me the exact command you're using when you try to play music on your JBL speaker? "Hey Google, play Ed Sheeran on JBL". The Nest will reply "Playing Ed Sheeran from Spotify on JBL." and nothing happens.
  • Does the command work when you say “Play Spotify on (JBL speaker name)” instead of relying on default speaker routing? No. I always splay to specific speaker (JBL).
  • Are you able to manually cast Spotify from the Nest Hub's screen to your JBL speaker without any problems? How do i do that?
  • What happens if you temporarily set a different speaker (not your JBL) as the default speaker for your Nest Hub? Does Spotify play correctly on that device when using voice commands? Yes it works for the Nest speakers. I do not have any other Google Home compatible speakers. In fact if I say "Play Ed Sheeran on <name of Google Nest> speaker" it works.
  • Do other users in the household get the same behavior with their voice and account? Same problem.
  • Do other music services, like YouTube Music or Apple Music, work correctly with voice commands on your JBL speaker through your Nest Hub? I do not have YT or Apple music but TuneIn works everytime with "Hey Google, play 987FM".
  • If you ask the Nest Hub to play music on itself, and then manually cast that to JBL, does the transition work smoothly? After Nest plays Spotify music, I am not able to tell Google to move the music JBL. Google does not recognise the command.
