Google Nest Mini Media Audio too Quiet

Sheridan
Community Member

As of a couple weeks ago, my Google Nest Mini Second Generation media audio has been playing very quietly (I use YouTube Music on my Mini). 50% audio started sounding like it was barely at 40% audio, now 60% audio sounds like it's playing at 50% audio, and it keeps getting worse. The assistant volume is perfectly fine, it's only media audio that has the problem.

This is my second Google Nest Mini. I got one for free and I bought a new one 1/14/23 because the first Google Mini was having the same issue.

I am having the same issue pretty much since new year hit. When I ask Google a question it blasts out at 100% volume to respond but its not playing my media that loud.

Hi folks,

That certainly hasn't been easy for you ― let's check it out. A few questions: is it only happening when playing YouTube Music? What happens if you manually change its volume to max or give the command "Hey, Google! Set volume to 9", could you test it out? It would help a lot if you could do a sequential reboot first. Unplug the power cord of your router followed by your Nest speakers. Plug them back in after 3 minutes tops. Restarting your phone might also help.

Also, check out this guide for better information about volume change.

Best,

Dan

I'm having the same problem with a Google Nest Audio... Quiet music but very loud assistant if I turn up the volume on the music to normal level.

Hello watchadam,

I'm sorry to hear that you're also experiencing the same concern. Have you already tried the steps provided above? Also don't forget to check the link for more information and do a sequential reboot too:

  1. Unplug the power cord of your router followed by your Nest speakers.
  2. Plug them back in after 3 minute.
  3. Restart your phone.

Tell me how it  goes.

Regards,

Dan

It's only happening with YouTube Music. Unfortunately nothing has helped fix it so far.

Hi watchadam,

Thank you for confirming that it's only happening on YouTube Music using your second Nest Mini. Even after having a new one, the issue still persists. By the way, what other music platforms have you tried? We might need to have a look onto YouTube Music to further isolate your concern.

Next steps would be to unlink your account from the Google Home app and  YouTube Music. Uninstal and reinstall the YouTube Music app and relink your account. Check out the steps below for extra help about linking music services to the Google Home app:

  1. Make sure your mobile device or tablet is connected to the same Wi-Fi network or linked to the same account as your speaker or display.
  2. Open the Google Home app.
  3. At the top right, tap your account.
  4. Verify that the Google Account shown is the one linked to your Nest speaker or display. To switch accounts, tap another account or Add another account.
  5. Go back to the home screen, and at the top left, tap Add > Music.
  6. To choose your default service, tap the music service you'd like to use. Assistant will use this service when you say “Hey Google, play music.”
  7. To link functionality:
    1. For YouTube, your accounts are automatically linked when you link your Google Account to your speaker or display.
    2. For Spotify, Apple Music, Pandora, and others, you'll need to link your accounts.
      • To connect your account, tap a music service > Link account > sign in or sign up for the service and follow the in-app steps.
      • To unlink an account, tap Unlink > Unlink account.

Note: For all services, speakers and displays currently support a single account per streaming service.

Also, check out this guide about listening to music.

Cheers,

Dan

I tried Spotify and Tidal and both had louder volume than YouTube Music on my Nest Audio speaker. I might switch to one of those services.

Hi folks,

@watchadam, thank you for confirming that Spotify and Tidal have a louder volume than YouTube Music on your Nest Audio. Since your Nest Audio relies heavily on these applications and services for the function, I suggest you go to its settings and see if there are options to increase the volume of music being played. Also, the volume of each music depends on the song that you're playing and on what kind of format it may have used when uploaded. It would also be of big help if you can reach out to YouTube Music support for more information on the matter.

If the issue persists, we can revert your Nest Audio back to its default and original settings. You need to set it back up again and start fresh. To factory reset your Nest Audio, follow the steps below:

  1. On the back of your device, switch the mic off. The lights will turn orange.
  2. Press and hold the center of the Nest Audio, near the top.
  3. After 5 seconds, your device will begin the factory reset process.
  4. Continue to hold for about 10 seconds more, until a sound confirms that the device is resetting.
  5. Re-do set up.

@Sheridan, @Googlybup, how are you doing? Have you had the chance to try the steps provided? How was it?

Keep us posted.

Kind regards,

Dan

Hi Dan, is there a way to set different volumes for different apps or functions on the Nest Audio? I thought there was only one volume setting that applies to everything.

Hey there,

If you give a voice command or play music using your Nest devices, then you can control the volume through the device directly. Either voice command or via touch.

When you cast from the YouTube Music app to your Nest device, you can either control the volume through the Nest device itself or through the volume of the device where the app is installed to.

Hope this helps.

Thanks,

Dan

I meant, can you set the assistant's voice at one volume and separately change the music's volume, rather than change them both together?

Hi watchadam,

Chiming in, currently there's no option to change the Assistant's voice on the Google Home/Nest speakers or display. We're always looking for ways to improve -- we'll take this as feedback, and we'll gladly pass it along to the team. You can also send feedback using your device by saying, "Hey Google, send feedback." Visit this link for more steps.

Muddi

Iv also run into this problem and iv found if I connect to my nest via Bluetooth it’s substantially louder than casting from the YouTube music app even though over Bluetooth it is still playing from the YouTube music app

Apparently this is a common issue, volume always set to max on all devices and after resets

Hi folks,

@Ausieking, this is not the experience we wanted you to have, let me help you. A few things: which Nest speakers are we working with? When did your issue begin? Were there any recent changes made?

It would help a lot if you could do a sequential reboot first:

  1. Unplug the power cord of your router followed by your Nest speakers.
  2. Plug them back in after 3 minutes.
  3. Restarting your phone might also help.

Keep us posted.
