Google Nest Mini works but won't join existing speaker group

Hi, I have 4 existing connected devices: 1 google home, 2 google home mini 1st gen, 1 chromecast audio. All 4 were purchased in the US, I am currently living in Singapore and all 4 work perfectly and are in a speaker group.

I recently purchased a new google nest mini (from Singapore) to add to the speaker group. The speaker connects fine, can be used to play music and answer questions etc, but refuses to join the speaker group. It shows up as an option to add to the group, but just says "couldn't connect" every time. It connects fine in every other option so by rights it should be working with the speaker group too.

Is this a known limitation that devices from different countries won't work in speaker groups? Do I need to return this and get one from the US or how can I trouble shoot this?

I've already tried: factory reset of the new device, factory reset of all of the original devices, updating my home app, resetting wifi router.

Thanks

Hiya!

Can you try updating the google nest mini's firmware as well any other google nest devices? I heard if software not up to date can cause issues when creating/adding new devices into a speaker group.

Thanks for the reply. The nest is on the latest firmware though (version 2.57.375114). Any other way to fix this?

Hi @bigo6o,

Thank you for posting, and I'm sorry for the delay. That's annoying that your Nest Mini isn't joining your speaker group. Let's see if I can get this fixed. If you can, please try these steps and let me know how they work.

  • First, make sure all your speakers, including the Nest Mini, are on the same Wi-Fi network and have the latest software updates installed.
  • Try restarting all the devices involved, including the Nest Mini, the other speakers, and your router or modem. Sometimes a simple restart can clear things up.
  • In some cases, deleting the existing speaker group and recreating it can solve the problem.
  • If none of these steps work, as a last resort, you can try resetting the Nest Mini to factory settings. Be aware that this will erase all its data and settings, so back up any important information beforehand.

Regards,

Jorge.

Thanks, Jorge. I have already tried each of the steps above. I've reset every device, put them on a 5g network, put them on a 2.4hz network, updated software, deleting and starting new speaker group, reset router, and also factory reset the nest mini. Nothing seems to work. Any other ideas?

Hi @bigo6o,

Thanks for your effort; you did an excellent job.

By the way, have you already tried changing the location on your phone? Since you mentioned that the devices were set up in the US, the location may be the issue. Please try changing the location to the US, the language to be English in the US as well, and try to add the device to your existing speaker group.

Please let me know how it goes.

All the best,

Jorge.
