Google mini keeps playing music after I ask it to stop

WoKaiLi
Community Member

For the past week or so, all 3 of my google mini's will start playing the radio again after I asked it to stop. Sometimes it is a minute after I asked it to stop, some times it is longer, but I have to unplug it to get it to stop. It has freaked us out at night. It will do this in rooms where no one else is. It's getting really frustrating. I saw that someone posted about this in February but no resolution was given. I say 'hey google stop' and it stops for a few seconds / minutes and then will start again.

Hi WoKaiLi,

Warmest welcome from the Community team!

Hats off to you for being patient this week regardless of the behavior of your 3 Google Home Mini´s. Let´s check it out and find the solution for you.

A few questions: how often does it play the radio without your command? Is it also happening on other music platforms? Other than yourself, does anyone else have access to your account or is added as a home member on your Google Home app?

I will be waiting for your response.

Regards,

Dan

It always plays after I have asked it to stop, it is just different amounts of time go by before it happens again. I'm always unplugging the minis. I've only been listening to the radio since this has been happening, I haven't tried it with my youtube music playlists.

My son is also in the house, but rarely near the minis and other than to say stop he doesn't really do anything with them.

Hey there,

Appreciate the reply and the details. For starters, I need you to do a sequential reboot starting with your WiFi router/modem, your Google Home Mini's, then your phone. Restarting your phone where your Home app is might help and tell me how it goes.

Best,

Dan

Thanks, I'll try that tonight.

I tested two out of the three (one is in the basement and I forgot about it). One did NOT turn back on, the other turned back on (radio) within about ten minutes.

Another of the three is turning back on after asking google to stop. It started about 2 mins later and would not stop until I unplugged it.

Hi WoKaiLi,

Thanks for trying some steps. Let's go ahead and perform a complete reset to your Google Nest Mini to see if there would be any changes after you set it up again.

Keep us posted.

Princess

The factory reset did not fix the problem. I just reset, turned on the radio and asked google to stop. about 5 mins later the radio came back on.

Based on multiple issues with basic functionality, like problems executing a variety of voice commands, that develpment for this device is NOT focused on UI/UX and end issue free operation. I wonder what the real purpose of this deivce is.

Come on google. Fix the bugs. The microsoft solution of "reboot everything and pray please" is no longer a good customer pacification technique. Might a suggest implimentation of an actual fix for the plethora of google Next mini comm/voice command issues?

Hi folks,

Apologies for the late reply.

Thank you for doing all the steps provided. There's one more step that I need you to do, when you play music, give the command "Hey, Google! Stop playing music/radio." Also, it would really be a big help if you can also try it on other music services like YouTube aside from radio. Just give the command "Hey, Google! Play music from YouTube."

Tell me how it goes.

Thanks,

Dan

I tried telling the minis (3 of them) to stop playing the radio station, it worked the first day and hasn't worked since. It starts playing again. I haven't had a chance / remember to play youtube music playlist to try that. so, the issue is still happening.

Hi WoKaiLi,

Thanks for the reply and I hear you. If you have the time, could you try playing music with YouTube music if the behavior is the same as when playing radio. By the way, what is the exact command you're giving?

Keep me posted.

Cheers,

Dan

I'm still having problems with radio. I tried with youtube playlist and 'hey google, stop' works and it does not come back on. For radio I've tried 'hey google, stop' and 'hey google, stop playing boom 97.3'. Neither works, it always starts up again. I have just stopped telling it to stop and just always unplug the mini. this is NOT acceptable.

Hi WoKaiLi,

Thanks for the reply and I really appreciate you isolating this to radio since you have tried with your YouTube playlist. If I may ask, is it through YouTube music or YouTube alone? Also, what is the exact command that you’ve used when asking the radio to stop? Is it only happening on selected radio stations?

It would really help a lot if you could try these commands:

  • “Hey, Google! Stop radio."
  • "Hey, Google! Stop playing radio.”
  • “Hey, Google! Stop what’s playing.”

Keep me posted.

Best regards,

Dan

It was a youtube music playlist that was successful.

Radio, I only listen to one radio station so I don't know if other stations are a problem. I listen to boom 97.3 out of Toronto, Canada. I'll try those commands. I already replied with what I have asked specifically for the stop, see my previous response.

Hey there,

I appreciate the response. If you don't mind me asking, have you tried all 3 commands before or just the "Hey, Google! Stop"? It would really be a lot of help if you can try the commands provided for us to further isolate since we can only test 1 radio station. Thanks for the understanding and patience.

Cheers,

Dan

I tried two different commands as I stated above. Please take a look at that response. You only just gave me 3 new commands so I haven't tried those yet. I will try them today or tomorrow.

I tried both of these:

  • “Hey, Google! Stop radio."
  • "Hey, Google! Stop playing radio.”

Neither worked. a few minutes later the radio started again. Nothing is working.

Hi WoKaiLi,

Thanks for trying the steps. Could you please provide the cast firmware version of your Google Nest Minis?

To check which firmware version you're on, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  2. Touch and hold your device's tile.
  3. Tap Settings and then Device information.
  4. Under "Technical information," check for Cast firmware: "X.XXX.XXXXX." If the device is on Fuchsia, check for System firmware version: "X.XXXXXXXX.X.XXXXXXX"

Best,

Princess

One is 1.56.324896

Two is 1.56.324896

the third one is no longer showing in google home so I can't check.

FYI, my issue with the Nest Mini loosing 90 iq points has "magically" resolved itself. After being unplugged for 2 weeks (while I was out of town) the unit has worked perfectly as of this morning. Clearly a back end issue has been resolved no?
