Google nest won't play Netflix or Disney+ content

Hey, so a few months ago my Nest Mini became unable to play anything from Disney+ on my Chromecast device ("Hey Google, play Grey's Anatomy from Disney+", "To play that you need to have a premium subscription."). The issue lasts to this day, I have factory reset both devices (Nest + Chromecast), removed and added my subscription info into the home app (up to date) and have tried about everything I can think of. (yes, everything is on the same WiFi, same household)

Now about 3 weeks ago, similar thing has happened to Netflix - I will say "Hey google, play Wednesday from Netflix on *Chromecast device*". The answer is always: "Got it, here's Wednesday on Netflix." Yet nothing plays. I've gone through the routine of factory resets, linking and unlinking and everything else.

However, if I cast from my phone onto the Chromecast, then functions like playing next episode, adjusting volume and fast forwarding work with voice commands.

Does anyone have any possible solutions? Thank you in advance.

Hi Adel_99,

Thank you for posting in the community! I understand that your Nest Mini is not able to start playing content from Disney+ or Netflix on your Chromecast using voice commands. However, casting from your phone and using voice commands for playback controls is working correctly. I appreciate your efforts in trying to solve this issue. I can definitely help you with this!

Please note that this functionality will not work if you have a Chromecast (1st gen) since it no longer receives software and security updates. Please check out this article to see the supported video Cast devices: Pick a preferred TV or speaker for video and audio playback.

To figure out why this is happening, please try the following troubleshooting steps:

Step 1: Verify linking and default settings:

  • Check linked services: In the Google Home app, go to your Assistant settings (usually under your profile photo) and ensure that both Netflix and Disney+ are correctly listed and linked under the Video section, and that "Link to Google Assistant" is enabled for both services. For reference, you can check out this article: Play TV shows and movies with your speaker or display.
  • Assign the Chromecast as default: Go into the settings for your Nest Mini within the Google Home app. Verify that your Chromecast is selected as the Default media player. This ensures the Google Assistant knows which device to use when casting.

Step 2: Test different apps and commands:

  • Test other streaming services: Try giving a voice command for a service that isn't Netflix or Disney+ (like YouTube or Spotify). This helps us see if the issue is limited to just those two apps or if it's a broader problem with the Assistant.
  • Try different voice commands: Check out this article for examples of working commands: Play TV shows and movies with your speaker or display. Try a few different ways to say the command.

Step 3: Test the Google Assistant app:

  • Test voice commands via the Google Assistant app: Try initiating the exact command (e.g., "play Grey's Anatomy from Disney+ on [Chromecast name]") directly through the Google Assistant app on your phone (by tapping the microphone icon) instead of speaking to the Nest Mini. This helps determine if the issue is with the Nest Mini's Assistant or a deeper cloud/account problem.

Step 4: Clear app cache and reconfigure:

  • Clear app cache: Clear the cache for both the Google Home app and the Google Assistant app on your phone. Note: Do not clear data unless prompted, as this will reset your app settings.
  • Re-enable Voice Match: In the Google Home app, go to your profile, tap Assistant settings > Voice Match, and set it up again. For guided instructions, see this article: Turn on voice recognition with Voice Match.

Let me know how it goes.

Best regards,

Jenniffer
