Nest devices no longer connected over cellular network on Google Home

I've been using several nest devices (Hub Max, Hub, two Google home minis) for several years.

Three days ago, I recognized that I cannot connect all devices via Google Home app on my Android phone under cellular network anymore.

I'm pretty sure that there had been no issues for several years to use Nest devices via cellular network after initialization under local wifi network in my house, indeed.

Now, the Google Home app keeps showing error message once I choose any Nest devices as like snapshots above.

So, I tried to several things to fix the problem.

  1. Forcing re-boot all Nest devices
    • Didn't work. Rebooting affected nothing.
  2. Connecting Nest devices under Wifi network, and re-connecting under cellular network again.
    • Didn't work. I could connect Nest devices under Wifi network. But Home app showed the same error like the snapshots once I change the network to cellular.
  3. Re-installing Google Home app with wiping any caches, data of Home app.
    • Didn't work. Deleting the app, and re-installing app affected nothing.

I tried to search similar issues via web, but no more helpful post was found.

While trying to fix this, I got an interesting point.

Since I'm using both iPhone and Android in parallel, I tried to connect to Nest devices via iPhone's Google Home app.

And, I realized that I can connect all Nest devices if I use Google Home app on my iPhone even under cellular network. It was quite swift and fast.

Even seeing Nest cam on my Hub Max worked on my iPhone very well.

I don't understand why Google home infra makes so many problem always.

Anyone who expect to fix this?

Note. I can handle all other devices (Bulbs, Air conditioner, Air purifiers and so on) via Android Google Home app under cellular network appropriately. Only Nest devices make issue as described.

Hi @Bii,

Thanks for reaching out to the community. I'm sorry to hear that your Nest Speakers and Displays can't be controlled using cellular data on your Android phone, and that you're getting an error message stating that your devices are unavailable. I understand how concerning this is, especially since you've noticed that you can control them using cellular data on your iPhone. I appreciate the detailed information you've shared and the time you've taken to try some troubleshooting steps. Don't worry; let's work together to resolve this issue. To help with that, I have a few questions for you:

  • What's the Google Home app version on both your Android and iOS phones?
  • Are you enrolled in the Google Home app's public preview version?
  • Are you using a VPN on either of your mobile phones?

Any additional details you can provide will be helpful.

Regards,
Jonathan

Hi Jonathan( @sicsacol),

Please see the follows:

  • What's the Google Home app version on both your Android and iOS phones?
    • Google Home 3.40.48.2 with Android 15 on Samsung Z Fold5
    • Google Home 3.41.50 with iOS 18 on iPhone 13 mini
  • Are you enrolled in the Google Home app's public preview version?
    • I don't know what the public preview version is. I've never used unstable version of any apps since I've begun to use any smartphone. So, such enrollment is out of my consideration.
  • Are you using a VPN on either of your mobile phones?
    • VPN doesn't matter based on my previous test (I've already tried things below)
      • Enabled VPN on iPhone : it works
      • Disabled VPN on iPhone : it works
      • Enabled VPN on Android : it doesn't work
      • Disabled VPN on Android : it doesn't work

Further information what I've learned for last week, here :

  • If I delete all app's data in the setting menu of the Android phone as follows, the Home app finally worked normally even on the cellular network. But after several hours, the Home app doesn't work normally anymore (same issue as described in this posting, after several hours)
    • Setting - Apps - Home app - Clear data (including cache) : it works for several hours (or minutes)
    • I have no idea about the reason why removing, and Re-installing the Home app doesn't work in comparison with clearing data.
  • I've updated my iPhone 13 mini to iOS26 with same version of Home app currently. Still, there's no issue with iOS (same as description in the original posting)

Nest devices are supposed to work perfectly with Google Home app on Android, I think.

But Google Home on iOS works much better than on Android now. How do I have to get this?

Jonathn,

To avoid any confusion, I add the explanation about the information from my previous reply.

After deleting app's data, turning on Wifi is required while re-running the Home app, so I enabled the Wifi.

But still, any Wifi network didn't connected because the testing was done outside my house (to use only cellular network), of course.

Thanks,
