Inconsistant speech recognition

SunnyRio
Community Member

I asked my Google Home speaker (1st gen) a question, it misheard "what's three quarters of twenty four" as "what's three quarters of twenty".  So I went to the history of the assistant on my phone, which wasn't what recorded the conversation, it was heard only by the speaker's mic.  It had 20 in the heard text, but when I played it back it was clearly 24.  And even more ridiculous, the phone heard itself playing it back, and answered, correctly!

Hi SunnyRio,

Thanks for reaching out — let’s see what’s going on. A few questions: does the success rate vary depending on how far away you are from the device? When you do other commands, does it give you a different result? What kind of environment is the device in (Noisy, normal, or quiet)? Also, Does the same issue occur when others are speaking to your Google Home?

Confirm if your Google Home recognized the question correctly see the instructions below:

  1. Use the command “Repeat the question” - Note: This repeats the last question you asked.
  2. Was the question repeated back the same way as you asked it?
    1. Note: If your Google Home still can't recognize the question, try to speak slower.

Regards,

Juni

Distance makes no difference.

It's fairly noisy, I have pet parrots, but it doesn't matter if they're squawking or not.

Yes, it has the same difficulty with anyone.

If I ask it to repeat the question, it reads it back incorrectly.

What is very weird is my phone, when I got it play back the actual recording which was previously misunderstood, responded to the recording correctly.  Surely after being played and recorded once more it can only get worse, not improve?  And isn't it all being done by the same server, the voice recognition software being run on the server?  In which case I suggest the server is sometimes overloaded?  Can you check the server load please?

I remember using voice recognition on computers 23 years ago.  Surely they've got better since then?

Hi there,

Understood. When you try to speak slower, does it understand your inquiry? Have you tried other commands too? Do you have another Google speaker? If so, are you getting the same result?

Try this in replacement for your question, "Three-quarters of twenty-four is equal to?"

Thanks,

Juni

Speaking slower doesn't seem to make much difference.  Doesn't matter how it's worded, and often if it doesn't understand, I repeat it without changing anything and it understands.  It really does seem to be random.

And as I said, since my phone understood the recording the speaker didn't, there's something weird going on.

Hi SunnyRio,

Understood. Did the alternative command work? Also, try to do the factory data reset and set up your Google Home as a new device then observe if it will make a difference. See the instructions below on how to do it:

Here’s how to reset your Google Home, press and hold the microphone mute at the back of your Google Home for about 15 seconds. You'll hear your Google Assistant confirm that it's resetting your Google Home.

This forum is driving me nuts.  I just wrote this answer, then was asked to fill in my profile?!  Seems it changed user account.  Now my answer has gone.  Do you have to use Khoros?  It's infamous crap.  They use the same useless system over on Ebay for their forum.  I can't actually sign out to get back in as my proper account.  I log out, then click the little person icon and suddenly I'm signed in again without it asking who I am or what my password is.  Insecure nonsense.

Back to the question.  As I already said if you were paying attention, any wording causes the same problem.  I will not reset my google home, I'm always being told to do that, it's been done many times.  And this is nothing to do with my system, as the speech recognition is done on the server.  It's the server which is broken.

We really want to get your Google Home back on track. Resetting your Google Home to default settings is the next best step. Give it a try!

Thanks,

We're going round in circles here, I've done the reset thing many times, it never improves anything.  I'm not doing it again.  Fix the server.
