Issues trying to set up Nest Audio speaker up at my wife's work (captive portal + travel router)

My wife started a new job and she got a lamp. I thought it would be nice to put a smart bulb in it so she could change the colors. Then I thought maybe I'd buy her a Nest Audio so she could use it to change the lamp, and also play music, ask Google questions, etc...

Well, the only Wifi they have available here is a guest network with a captive portal. Apparently that does not work. I thought perhaps a travel router would work since I could set it up with an SSID and use that to set up the Nest Audio. I have a travel router at home, Gi.net Beryl AX. I have NEVER really gotten that thing to work anywhere for whatever reason, but I thought I would give it a try.

Well I spent a long time yesterday trying to get that thing set up. I struggled mightily trying to get it set up and I think I got it, so I tried adding the Nest Audio to Google Home. It seemed like it was working but eventually every time would say "There may be a problem" and "The update is taking longer than expected". To complicate things, I also was having intermittent problems with the travel router, so I couldn't really figure out what the issue was.

I ordered a different travel router (TP-Link AX1500), with the expectation that if I was able to get that to work, I would have no problem getting this Nest Audio working. Well, I seem to have that working ok, as far as the router part of this goes. I've got my personal laptop and my phone and my wife's phone all connected to it for Wifi and it seems to be working as well as it should. However, when trying to add this Nest Audio through Google Home, I'm still running in to the same issues as yesterday on the other router. I guess that has helped me narrow down (I think) that the issue is not the router itself, but probably either the Nest Audio speaker (I doubt this is likely) or somehow related to the way the network is set up here in her office.

Does anyone have some ideas of what I could try to pinpoint the issue? Thank you.

Hi NurseWizzle,

Thanks for reaching out to our community.
I understand that you are trying to set up your Nest Audio speaker at your wife's new job, using the office's guest Wi-Fi network, which utilizes a captive portal. To address this inconvenience, you invested in two different travel routers that can be configured with an SSID; however, the inconvenience still persists. It is my pleasure to assist you with this concern.
Based on the settings features available for the Google Nest devices, I found that they do not work with captive portal networks. On these networks, you must sign in on a web page and sometimes accept terms and conditions before you can connect.  To learn more, please check out this Google Help Nest Center article: Wi-Fi networks that are incompatible or aren’t recommended.
Feel free to keep us posted if you have more questions.

Best regards,
