Keeps restarting by itself

AndreasLinbro

Hi,

I have a Google Nest Hub (1st gen) that have been working fine until recently. It restarts itself randomly, usually when I give it a command like play XXX on Spotify (other commands too), but not every time.

What can be wrong?

Regards,

Andreas

Just out of curiosity, and also because Customer Support didn't seem to know what was happening, I just let my Google Home and Nest devices continue as normal, and the random restarts died down. They still happen occasionally, but it now seems to be like a once every two weeks or so that I notice it. I have 8 speakers playing classical for my cat all day while I'm at work, and only occasionally will I come home to silence (when one restarts in a group, the whole group stops playing music - at least from Apple Music).

Although, at night I only use one Nest Mini to play thunderstorm sounds while I sleep, and it hasn't shut off on me. I have no idea what the other devices are doing while I sleep, but it hasn't affected the Nest Mini that plays solo.
I'm sorry I don't have any helpful insight. Wishing you all the best of luck!

Bought two today, and within an hour of setting the first one up, it rebooted itself while playing music. What the actual Google. Going to give it a bit to break in, but might end up returning them.

Mine is doing the same

My Nest Hub 2nd gen also has this issue. It will restart at random times of the day. I'm just hoping this doesn't happen when my alarm is supposed to wake me up in the morning! 😬

Is there a fix to this? I haven't gone through all the comments. I've had various issues that started over the summer 2021, problems that I thought were a temporary issue that may be solved with firmware updates soon enough, but they only gradually worsened. I even thought it might be a direct attack on my PERSONAL Google Account for some reason since some of the issues were literally spread to my Google / Nest video devices.. I'll explain.. But it's good to know this is not the case, based on everyone having similar issues.

I've had my Nest Hub Display Max since the 2020 holidays along with two Google Chromecast with Google TV devices. Within the first 6 months, I began to notice very strange picture distortion but only when viewing YouTube videos that were embedded within a web page, such as a news media website that would put YouTube videos within. I would see a bunch of green lines on a black background, with audio at times, other times it would show an error shortly after starting to watch. This was also happening on my phone at times, so I figured it was some glitch... Well, by August, I started to notice my screen, whether on YouTube or just on the home screen (on either of my video devices) was getting lines of various colors and it split up into 4 sections, four quadrants to be specific. This was on all three devices, but more frequent on the Chromecast devices. (now you see why I thought my personal account may have been compromised with whatever it may have been). Strange issue...

The most recent set of frustrations began with these so-called "self-restart" issue that's been occurring only on my Nest Hub Display Max, which started about 3 months ago, mid-February 2022. I say "so-called" because I'm unsure if it is really restarting itself of it is doing a dumby screen for whatever reason which appears to be the Google Logo in the loading/booting phase that we see when it boots up, since the device will remain responsive (usually) during this time.. Just say "hey Google" or ask a question you'll see. Once again, I thought it was a temporary issue, but it only gradually worsened. It restarts itself whether I'm giving it a command or sometimes I've noticed it while walking by. Even multiple times in the same hour. Worst is when it stays stuck on that screen for hours (left home, came back, still stuck) and you have to unplug.

Would be real helpful to know if there is a fix because a full hard reset along with Reset to Factory Settings and latest firmware do absolutely nothing.

Haven't had many issues after the first month or so. Only time I've had issues lately is while streaming my Wyze cams to the hub. Not sure what changed for me.

Same issue here. Google, are you doing something? 🙂 I'm tired of months of restarts, or talking different things in the middle of the night without any audio device nearby to wake my mini up...

Same here. Those that were about to get theirs replaced, how did you do it?

My google mini kept rebooting when she talks when playing music or anything I found turning the volume to like 60 keeps it from rebooting when at 100 it was doing that since turning it down it hasn’t reboot been working fine try that see if it works

I can almost guarantee that's a power issue. Try another power supply and I bet it fixes your issue.

I changed cords I changed charging boxes moved it and everything what I found to work is keeping the volume to 60 I don’t much use google everything runs off Alexa in my home I use google for music in my laundry room

Seeing this topic being updated each month with another bug that not making sens and a fix that not making any more sens is so funny, in my case my Nest Hub restart by itself like once a month since a reset + last firmware update

I love how mine has started these lockup and reboots since about February. I always hit the bug report button. Seems to happen most often when launching spotify.

Contact Google. They asked for proof and after showing them pictures they ended up replacing the 1st gens with 2nd gens. This fixed my problems.

purchased a 2nd gen model last christmas and still have to deal with reboots at-least 3 times a day. (possibly more but who knows)

I just bought a 2nd Gen and it keeps restarting every 10-15min. Tried rebooting, factory reset and power cable checked. Nothing work. This is really frustrating and looks like many others are experiencing the same.

I'm experiencing the same problem. Installed my Nest Router July 2022, and over the past month or two it has been rebooting itself multiple times per hour. It's driving me nuts.

Same here. I wouldn't mind if IT WOULD REMEMBER WHAT IT WAS DOING AND RESUME THAT when it's done rebooting.

I use the Nest Hub (both Max and 2nd gen) to monitor security cameras. When it reboots, it goes back to displaying wallpaper.

If it rebooted once in a while but resumed displaying the same camera - by itself - I'd be fine with it.

I have the 2nd gen Nest hub and keeps restarting with a humming noise and then after reboot it works

Also lot of times it doesnt connect automatically to my Android box over bluetooth and also suddenly drops bluetooth connection. I had the same issue with Google mini. It looks like a software issue and sadly google doesnt know how to fix it despite so many users complaining. Alexa is much better and stable. Never drops the bluetooth connection on same setup once connected. Sadly I have invested in 3 Google devices and all are equally buggy. Pathetic.

Are Google just ignoring this issue? Ours does the same, multiple reboots a day by itself. Sometimes you have a timer going, and it just restarts and your timer is gone.

I was told to update mine manually even though it was already up to date. I don't know if they did something on their side but it fixed the issue.

Has anyone gotten any resolution for this?  Mine has just started doing this.  Works fine then get a connection error and then it resumes.  (Hub/doorbell video feed)

Woolfy

Nope. I gave up and just stuck it in a box and in my closet. Hopefully one day it will get fixed but, who knows.

Yes, I contacted Google multiple times. Then rang Google. Explained my issues. Gave test results from their suggested fixes. It took multiple pictures, videos, calls and receipts of purchase to prove the issues. Mine were gen 1 models. They ended up replacing with gen 2 models. I have not had the issues since.

I threw away old one which I bought at half price and bought another one at half price, just told myself that I paid full price for a working one

I have two hubs that I've been running for a couple of years now.  Both random reboots since day 1.

I would not complain if they returned to the state before the reboot.  I keep both monitoring the front door (Hello doorbell).  Seem when they reboot the doorbell will go off line as well, or at least looses the connection to the hubs.

Very annoying to have to reset what I want displayed two or three times a day and nearly every morning when I get up.

Exactly the same for me - using Wyze cameras.

FWIW, I bought an Amazon Echo w/display, hoping it would be better.  But it's worse - same problem, but more often.

I've resorted to using mine as paperweight because it reboots all the freaking time and it's so annoying. I won't be purchasing Google products anymore
