Limit music playback to audio (No music videos)

Almost
Community Member

Why don't we have an option or a specific term to use when requesting music so that Google devices play audio or music videos.  For the Google devices I have with screens I'd still like the option to only play audio, but especially when acting my mini to play music while working out I don't want to be listening to a 1 minute lead in to a music video.

Yes, this is an issue. We should be able to say "Hey google, play some music" and not get videos/people talking/bad music video acting/live versions/lyric videos etc...  Whoever decided/coded this should be fired.

How can we fix this?

Hey folks,

That certainly hasn't been easy for you — let's see what's going on.

Was it working before? What's the exact command you've used in playing music on your Nest display? Also, what's your default music provider? Do you have a premium subscription?

Looking forward to your response.

Best,
Alex

I have the Google music service, or YouTube Premium, whatever the name has changed to now.

Usually I'd use a command similar to "Hey google, play "artist name"" or "hey Google play song by artist".  If I try to play the song "A Little Bit Off" it's a 50/50 change of getting the actual song or the music video. If I ask my google mini it almost always defaults to the music video even though it obviously doesn't have a screen.  If there's a specific term to use to have it stick to audio only that would be great to know.

Hi Almost,

Thanks for the response and we are sorry for the confusion. You can add the keyword YouTube Music on your command like “Hey Google”  "Play [song name]," "Play [song name] by [artist name]," “Play [song name>] on YouTube music”.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Juni

I have been testing out the suggestions from your previous reply and that seems to prevent videos from playing.  Thank you for your help.

Hi ryannemeth,

Thanks for the response and I'm sorry that you  are still experiencing the issue. Could you try the command that was suggested in this thread and observe if it will work for you too? Here it is again. “Hey Google”  "Play [song name]," "Play [song name] by [artist name]," “Play [song name>] on YouTube music”.

Keep me in the loop.

Juni

So my wife just told me again at the end of the day yesterday that our Google Mini is still having the issue.  If requesting it as stated in this thread the Mini still plays a video version of a sound despite not having a screen.  I've heard her request one of our displays to play music on YouTube Music as well and noticed it played videos too.

Hi Almost,

Thanks for the details and I’m sorry that you are still experiencing the issue. You can try to do a sequential reboot. First, unplug your Nest speakers/ displays for 30 seconds, then do the same thing to your Wi-Fi router to refresh both devices and your Wi-Fi signal.

Keep me posted.

Best,

Juni

Hello,

My nest hub max still plays video content when i ask "hey google play some music"

I am only asking for music, not video. Please submit a ticket to have this code fixed.

Thanks,

Ryan

Hi ryannemeth,

You might want to follow these commands as stated above: you can add the keyword YouTube Music on your command like “Hey Google”  "Play [song name]," "Play [song name] by [artist name]," “Play [song name>] on YouTube music”.

It would help a lot if you could do a sequential reboot first. Unplug the power cord of your router followed by your Nest speakers. Plug them back in after 3 minutes tops. Restarting your phone might also help.

Tell us how it goes.

Dan

I'm still finding that regardless of my phrasing in the request for music to be played it's at random whether or not YouTube Music plays music or music videos.

ryannemeth

Yes, my hub max still plays music videos when I specifically ask for "music".

Please escalate to have this resolved.

Thank you,

Ryan

I'm also having this issue with my nest hub max. When I say "hey Google play some music" it will play one or two songs then it will play music videos. I've heard before that google pays less royalties for music videos on YouTube than just the audio version of songs, I assume that's why they are pushing music videos so much.

Hello folks,

We're sorry for the trouble this may have caused you. Could you give these additional steps a try:

  1. Open the YouTube Music app, and make sure you're signed into your YouTube Music Premium membership.
  2. Select your profile photo > Settings.
  3. Switch Don’t play music videos to the on position.

Regards,

Alex

I do have this settings enabled in the app on my phone and it doesn't change what the Google homes do regarding videos or just music.

Hi Almost,

Gotcha. Could you provide us the cast firmware version of your Google Home speaker? Once done, please fill out this form and let us know once you're done.

I have already submitted a form in another task for this same issue, why do you need another one?

https://www.googlenestcommunity.com/t5/Speakers-and-Displays/Hub-Max-playing-music-videos-and-concer...

Can you please answer this question - When i ask my hub max to play MUSIC by saying "Hey Google, play some music", what is the expected result? just music or music mixed with video and live concerts etc..?

Thanks,

Ryan

Hi ryannemeth,

Apologies for the delayed response. If the command is "Hey, Google! Play music", your Nest display should only play random music. Videos can be played if you specifically ask Google to play a video from specific music services.

Since you've already submitted a form with the same issue, you can continue the conversation there since you will be speaking with our higher support team.

We apologize if we will close this thread sooner than you would have liked. As Community Specialists, we occasionally do a bit of housekeeping to keep the conversations in our community fresh and relevant. This includes locking threads after a period of inactivity.

We'll be locking the thread in the next 24 hours, but if you still need help, I would be happy to keep it open. If there's more we can do, just let me know.

Kind regards,

Dan

Do you and your employer understand that Music = Audio, Music <> video. This is the issue, please have this code fixed so when we ask "hey google, play some music" it just plays music and not videos.

If i say "hey google, play some music videos" and it plays vides, great! But thats not what i am asking it to do, if i just ask for music, please only play music.

Does this make any sense to you at all? Do you care at all? Music is audio, not video.

Please do not close this until this is fixed. When i say "hey google, play some music" i just want MUSIC.

Thanks,

Ryan

Within the YouTube Music application on Android and on PC there is a toggle at the top of the UI to move between videos and audio. Why hasn't this feature been implemented on the home devices, or why isn't there a voice command to toggle between these two options?

Dan_A

Hi Almost,

I understand that this would be a helpful feature, however this option is not available. Features are limited compared to the actual app which can be opened through phones and computers. We don't have any news to share about your desired feature with the Nest devices.

In line with this, we want to encourage you to send feedback from your end and we’re hoping for all the possibilities by taking our user’s feedback and suggestions. Let us know if you have additional questions, otherwise we'll be locking the thread in 24 hours.

Thanks,

Dan
