Local Device on Public Network

Hello,

Tonight, I just received a notification in my Google Home app of a 'Family Room TV' playing the Amazon Prime app.  At first, I was freaked out, thinking someone was in my home, but soon came to realize that it is a TV here at Work that was likely the culprit.  Doing a little digging online, it seems that the Home app thinks it's being helpful by listing local devices on a network - this is the furthest from the truth though.  This is a serious security breach (even though the device wasn't mine, and I didn't consciously set it up in my app, I could tell it to stop playing, control volume, etc) and needs to be addressed.  At the very LEAST, the app needs the ability to remove/ignore any and all devices that show up, whether they're part of you "home" or not - better yet, don't automatically add them at all, let us do it manually.  Please address this issue, and fast - like I said, it's a pretty serious security violation, and I even have half a mind to report it to my company's IT department.  This is a big invasion of privacy and overreach on Google's part and needs to be fixed.

Hi Raven2k360,

Thanks for bringing this up.

If a Google Nest speaker is connected on a Wi-Fi where others are connected to, you can most likely see these devices as an available device. However, turning off cast media control for others will prevent if from happening. Here's the steps on how to do it.

To prevent others on your Wi-Fi network to control your media casting, you can turn off Cast media control notifications on your Chromecast or your speaker or display.

  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  2. Tap Favorites or Devices
  3. Touch and hold your device's tile and then tap Settings Settings and then Recognition & sharing.
  4. Turn Let others control your cast media off.

Turn off Cast media control notifications on your phone

To permanently turn off Cast media control notifications from displaying on your phone, follow the steps below:

Option 1:

  1. On the notification, tap Settings Settings.
  2. Turn Show remote control notifications off Off.

Option 2:

On your phone, tap Settings Settings

Tap Google and then Devices & sharing and then Cast options and then Turn off Media controls for Cast devices.

To turn notifications back on, turn on Media controls for Cast devices.

Hope this answers your question.

Best,

Princess
