Nest Audio Bluetooth keeps disconnecting

j0ashm
Community Member

Just purchased a Google Nest Audio this week.

To my dismay, the Bluetooth on it just refuses to work.

I try connecting it to my phone via Bluetooth, the connection works for about 3 minutes and then suddenly drops off.
I can’t reconnect to Bluetooth.

I end up having to completely reboot the nest device, forget the device on Bluetooth and then do the entire pairing process again.

extremely inconvenient. Are there any solutions to this?

I dealt with occasional disconnects when casting but it was worse with bluetooth.  I finally found a setup that works for me without disconnects but it essentially turns the Nest Audio into a dedicated bluetooth speaker.  We have several bluetooth devices in our home and I've had the Nest Audio in several locations so I don't think the issue is related to interference.  I  did a factory reset and did the bare minimum to get it set back up.  I then paired it with my phone for bluetooth.  Once everything was working how I wanted it, I went through the Google Home app and told it to forget the wi-fi network.  After rebooting it again I have never been disconnected while playing music.  I've got great wi-fi coverage in my home but it seems like when the device is actually online, it is unreliable as a bluetooth speaker.  It's useless as a smart speaker now but the audio quality is pretty good for a bluetooth speaker.

It is awesome that we have to choose between bluetooth speaker and smart speaker, from my little experience with alexa, I don't think i will be going back to it, I have already put it up for sale. Thanks for sharing though

I got most of my money back when I submitted an insurance claim on my nest audio. I suppose many other people did too and still put theirs up for sale. Becasue before I got mine I noticed lots of sale on Mercari app and now it made ense why they could also afford to sell it below cost, for about the same amount. I got back when I made my insurance claim.

I'm surprised Google just doesn't send people out a new speaker in exchange for their defunct one. I did contact Google about it, but had bought it through a Target seller, but I think Google was about to send a replacement possibly.

I guess I got lucky my problem occurred within the first 2 months I owned the device.

There are way better bluetooth speakers for the same amount of money. Google is ripping everyone off selling stuff that doesn't completely work at premium prices, and then ignoring all the complaints.

Which Bluetooth speakers do you think sound better for the same money? I have a nest audio and HomePod mini, I think the nest audio is better by a long way. The Bluetooth and WiFi connections do drop for me too unfortunately. The best I have heard for reasonable money is the vifa oslo and the worse VFM I think are the B&O offerings apart from the beolit.

Bose works better. If the nest audio is only goign to work as a Bluetooth speaker Bose has a Bluetooth peaker at a similar cost.

I ended up getting a Bose 500 that while I try to Google everything as a smart speaker it's limited in ways that nest audio wasn't.. Like ending the information to my phone. But maybe it's error on my end.

But overall switched to bose and I'm not going back. Too much to figure out how to make everything irk together now that I have smart lights too but through Bose I can alos control my smart lights too.

What does rebooting mean?

Sorry.  I meant restarting.  Just unplug it and plug it back in.

Noted. I have just done the whole procedure, hopefully it stays connected. Thanks for the information.

I have just gone back to my HomePod mini. In the same room with the same WiFi there are no drop outs at all, whereas the nest had dropouts with both WiFi and Bluetooth. Resetting didn’t make a difference for me. Shame really because the audio quality was miles better than anything I’ve heard and the HomePod is useless with Spotify as there is no Siri support for that yet.

Same here ever since I bought it, it keeps disconnecting the bluetooth from the TV every single day.

I reported previously that the problem became less severe by setting the delay time to 5 ms, which was 0 ms initially. Now I set it 15 ms and I have not encountered a single problem for over a month.

How did you do that

Use Home.app on Android. Go to the device. Press snowflake-like symbol on upper right corner. Then locate speaker and press on it. Locate Audio and press on it. Find "group delay correction" which displays delay time in ms and press on it. Sync audio opens. See  a bar that sets the speaker delay. Adjust it to 15 ms or more.

@Jake this might give the dev team a lead, please pass it on.

I tried the delay but that didn’t work for me at all. Turning off Bluetooth in other devices not using the speakers is simply not a viable option. I have multiple devices with Bluetooth I need that have bother you do with the speakers.

However, I did notice that for apps that support Google Cast, if I connect to the speaker that way I never have drop out. For the same app or any app that does not support Google cast, the drop out is constant.

I solve this problem with this Bluetooth transmitter

Solved my issues now I have my 2 nest audio speakers paired and 2 Soundcore Flare 2 speakers paired as this transmitter can pair 2 Bluetooth connections at once

Just bought the Nest Audio and a few hours in and it has disconnected three times from Bluetooth . . . unreal, terrible product I would not recommend this for any Bluetooth usages.

Surprised to see that this issue has been known for so long and that so little effort has been done

Ivan24

Like many others, same issue. Simply is a faulty product. Shame on you google. The only thing we can do is to make this known as widely as possible. This is outrageously incompetent behaviour from google.

Someone recommended updating the Nest Audio unit by doing a factory rest and then re-trying Bluetooth connection.
has anyone tried this?

That’s RESET

Yes, many of us. I’ve tried it multiple times. No luck.

@khi 's response fix the issue for me on my tv

Use Home.app on Android. Go to the device. Press snowflake-like symbol on upper right corner. Then locate speaker and press on it. Locate Audio and press on it. Find "group delay correction" which displays delay time in ms and press on it. Sync audio opens. See  a bar that sets the speaker delay. Adjust it to 15 ms or more.

Unfortunately, it didn't work for me

Tried what you said and it made no difference

I have this same issue on two different Google Nest speakers.  I just purchased one November 2022 and the same issue persists.  When I try to connect and can't, I reboot the device.  When I do actually connect, the speaker at some point later (it's seemingly random), just disconnecdts.

iPhone 11 Max Pro is up to date (ios 16.1.2)
Google Nest:  System firmware version 299498

Cast firmware 1.56.299498

This doesn't happen with my old Google Home Smart speaker.

Ok.  I read through the entire thread and it seems rather clear there is no solution for this.  I think it's safe to say the hardware is faulty so I have returned the new Nest speaker.  It's a shame because it's an otherwise decent product.

Same problem!! seems it's been going on for a very long time with no solution. it is pretty annoying!!

Just bought two of the Google Nest devices and same story as everyone. Casting keeps disconnecting! Annoying! Generic Bluetooth speakers are better. Spread the word to your friends.

UPDATE (12/4/2022) - I did a factory reset and this seems to have resolved the issue. I had to setup some of my preferences, but not too much of a hassle. It's been about a week and still working. Here's how to do it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJCyYDVix24    I really like my device and use it to turn on lights, listen to music, get the weather, etc. so fingers cross that this fix sticks. Good luck folks!

This thread and trouble goes on for years, all of a sudden a community "specialist" will drop in to simply ask "do you still need any help?" people eagerly respond and then never to be heard again from this so called specialist, hilarious.

sigh, i commented in here getting near a year ago, and even then my comment says ive had this issue for 8 months, so ive had this issue for almost 2 years now and still nothing ive ever found will fix this issue.

10 to 20 times per day for 2 years i have had to reconnect my speaker via bluetooth to my phone.

when will this issue ever be fixed v__v how hard is it to just make the speakers stay connected to bluetooth 24/7 lol same thing happens to all my nest mini's and my Nest Audio.

I deeply regret investing in a full speaker system ( 3 independent speakers and 1 pair ) before i knew about this issue. Too late ro return, no fix for more than a year ( for me ) and none foreseeable.

As I indicated in another thread (on update of firmware), the new firmware seems to solve the issue (at least for bluetooth). I tested this WE, and no longer drop outs. So hopefully this new firmware is rolled out to everyone with this annoying issue.
