Nest Audio speakers no longer playing music via voice command

I have several Nest Audio speakers around my home that have responded to voice commands relatively well for months/years. For example, every day at my son's naptime, "Ok Google, play Magic Piano Covers in Kid's Room" - Spotify is linked and set as default in Google Home, and it always worked without issue.

I went out of town for a week and now that I've returned, that phrase gets a positive response from the speaker, "Ok, playing Magic Piano Covers in Kid's Room..." - but nothing happens. Sometimes it says "Something went wrong, try again in a few seconds" - I've also tried other linked services (Pandora) with no success.

  • First I tried a reboot of all the speakers via Google Home, the lights flashed, it chimed, once rebooted - still not working...
  • Tried unplugging all the speakers for several minutes, then plugged them back in - still not working...
  • Tried restarting my Netgear Nighthawk Router - still not working...
  • Unplugged my cable modem, my router, all the speakers, waited 5m - plugged in the cable modem, once online, plugged in my router, once broadcasting, plugged in the speakers - still not working...
  • Unlinked Spotify and Pandora in Google Home, reset the service account to YouTube, voice commands worked - relinked Spotify and Pandora - back to not working...

Super frustrated with this loss of functionality. Any suggestions?

Hi cmarcera,

Thanks for reaching out to the community! I understand you're experiencing some inconveniences with your Google Nest Audio speakers. For months, they've reliably played music from Spotify and Pandora with voice commands like 'Ok Google, play Magic Piano Covers in Kid's Room.' But, since returning from a week-long trip, while the speakers acknowledge the command, they fail to play your music. I appreciate all the troubleshooting steps you've taken to try to get your Google Nest Audio speakers working as efficiently as before. It's definitely frustrating when some devices don't work as expected. I'm here to help! To gather some more details, I'd like to ask the following questions:

  • Do you have a Spotify or Pandora premium subscription?
  • Did you temporarily turn off Google Assistant? Please visit our helpful article to check it: Temporarily turn off Google Assistant

Please keep me posted; I look forward to your response.

Best regards,

Juan

  • Do you have a Spotify or Pandora premium subscription? Yes, to both.
  • Did you temporarily turn off Google Assistant? I did not, but my Nest speakers started magically working to the response 24 hours after this post. I changed nothing, it just started working again.

I started having the same issue this week. Tried to play some relaxing music for my dog and it won't work. Tried on my 3 speakers and they all "accepted" the request but then came back with an error message asking me to try again when I'm ready.

I'm assuming it has something to do with Gemini, but your response on how it magically fixed itself leaves me even more baffled.
