Nest Hub randomly speaking and playing music

Spillerz19

I purchased a Google Nest (2nd Gen) back in March to replace an Alexa in our kitchen and it has been a complete nightmare to the point I am considering just giving up with it.

Issues started when using it for a timer when cooking, and we found the timer would randomly pause itself on several occasions so we had to stop relying on it. It also randomly starts playing “relaxing sounds” despite never asking it to do this. We came home yesterday evening to find it had been playing river noise for 50 minutes despite no one being in the house.
Most recently it has decided to start announcing the weather constantly. This morning it has randomly told us the weather three times, and the other day I could hear it announcing the weather 4 times in space of 30 mins despite me being in another room. This is more of a recent problem but is now happening several times a day.

I feel like I have tried everything possible to try and resolve the issues, including

- Turning it off and on several times

- Completely resetting the device 2-3 times

- Verified my account is only one connected to the device

- Checked device is on latest firmware version

- Turning down the “Hey Google” sensitivity

- Turning off gestures

- Disabled all stock automations and have no custom ones

Also when these random events happen they are never logged in the Google activity audit. Any help or advice from anyone experiencing similar issues would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Spillerz19,

That certainly hasn’t been easy for you and we appreciate you having the time to do the troubleshooting steps you mentioned. Kindly send us the firmware version of your devices for us to isolate further. Follow the steps below:

  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  2. Touch and hold your device's tile.
  3. Tap Settings  and then Device information.
  4. Under "Technical information," check for Cast firmware: "X.XXX.XXXXX." If the device is on Fuchsia, check for System firmware version: "X.XXXXXXXX.X.XXXXXXX"

Check the version on your Nest display:

  • Swipe up from the bottom of the display screen.
  • Tap Settings  and then About device. You should find your "Cast firmware version."
    • For Nest Hub (1st gen) and Nest Hub Max: If “Fuchsia Version” is also listed, this means your device runs Fuchsia.

Keep us posted.

Best,

Dan

Hello Spillerz19,

Thanks for the information.

Let’s try these steps:

  • Open the Google Home app > Settings > + Add > Tap Home.
  • Assign a home nickname, and enter the home address.
  • Switch to the original home > Devices.
  • Tap your Google Nest Hub > Settings > Remove device > Remove.
  • Switch to the new Home > Devices > Under Other cast/Local devices, tap Google Nest Hub > Add to a room. Follow the prompts in adding it to a room.

Monitor it and let us know how it goes.

Thanks,
Alex

Hi @Alex_S I followed your instructions but still seeing the same behaviour.

The issue with it randomly announcing the weather is becoming the most prevalent. I just observed it start announcing the weather without being asked, I said “Hey Google stop” it stopped for ~15 seconds, then started announcing the weather again, then told me tomorrows, then todays again.

It really does seem that once it announces the weather it insists on repeating the task, as while writing this reply it has told me the weather a further 3 times.
