Nest Wifi + UE Megaboom sync up...

mdini
Community Member

Hello!

I have a Nest Wifi set-up with a hub in the living room and two nest points in the bedrooms.  The wifi points are speakers, so we have synced Spotify music in the bedrooms, but I'd love to have the same music playing from the speaker I have in the living room too (an Ultimate Ears Megaboom 3 bluetooth speaker).  But I just can't figure out a way to get the Nest points and Ultimate Ears speakers to play together.

Some details:

- I don't just want the living room speaker to pair with one of the bedroom speakers so it takes over its output, I want all three speakers playing music

- I can see all speakers in the bluetooth menu of my Mac laptop, but can't play output from all of them at once

- I've grouped the Nest speakers into one speaker group that I can see on Spotify connect as a Chromecast stream, but the Megaboom doesn't show up there

- I've tried grouping all three speakers as an 'Aggregate Device' (https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202000) using Apple's Audio Midi Setup app, but again, can never play out of all speakers at once

I've run out of solutions, I'd love any ideas you all have, thanks for the help!

Hi, mdini.

I think the issue you might be running into with your setup is that while pairing with bluetooth speakers is possible, the bluetooth speaker will not play when grouped with multiple speakers or it will be the only speaker to play. I'm sorry that it's been frustrating and confusing, but maybe I can clear it up a bit. Speaker groups function over the network for devices that are WiFi enabled and have cast capability. Here's an article on bluetooth pairing and I think it explains better why a bluetooth speaker doesn't work for speaker groups: https://bit.ly/3mxT8Z6.

If you have any more questions on this, let me know and I can go deeper on this.

Thanks.

Hey Jeff!

Thanks for the answer, sorry for the slow reply.  Yeah, I figured this out too, that the bluetooth speaker would just never be compatible with the Nest mesh as an ersatz speaker node.  Too bad!  I actually got it to work once for about 10 minutes using the program Airfoil, but then somehow never again 😞  If Google made the Hub with a built-in speaker, this would solve everything...

Anyway, thanks for the thoughts

Yeah, sorry to hear it doesn't quite work out in a way that would be best for you. I can definitely see how it would be a killer feature. Before I mark this as resolved, I did want to see if there's anything else you needed. If so, just let me know.

Thanks.

...well, since you mention it, if you have any idea why one of my Nodes will periodically wake up with a life of its own, I'm all ears 😃  Without prompt, the Assistant will suddenly act like she received a question and either start playing music or say she cannot complete some unknown request.  It happens at random times of day, I can't detect a pattern. Ever heard of anything like this?  The Google Nest team's response was just that I live in Hong Kong and the product isn't designed to work here, so they cannot help me...

Well, let's look into that then. What region do you have your WiFi network set to, by chance? Being in non-supported regions can cause some issues, but not typically random behaviors. We can work on this and see if we can figure it out.

Hi,
I just wanted to check in real fast to see if you saw my reply and if you had that info.
Thanks.

sorry I'm so slow responding!  It's a busy time at work...

I can't seem to find the 'Region' setting, but I most likely set it to Hong Kong.  I also have trouble believing that would be enough to result in such random behaviors.  And by the way, is there any way to see a history of Assistant events?  Maybe I could pinpoint the random events the Assistant seemed to be responding to?

Thanks again!

Hey, mdini.

You can check the history of your Assistant interactions. Here's how.

  1. Open the Google Home app .
  2. At the top right, tap your account.
  3. Tap My Activity .

Let me know if that works for you.

thanks, Jeff - really funny to see all of our random Assistant questions laid out historically, actually 🙂

I can account for basically all of them except periodically it just says "Used Assistant", but with no further info. Perhaps those events are the ones when the Point seems like it's possessed...?

That's possible, mdini. I can continue to look into things as well and see if we can find a solid answer on this.

Hey Jeff,

a little update...

The 'possessed Node' thing happened again yesterday: suddenly the Assistant woke up and started yammering about local directions we hadn't asked for.  I checked My Activity and there is no record of the event happening at that time.  So bizarre!

Hi, religion.

I have a meeting later today with an internal team and I'll bring that up. The directions are very, very random. Sometimes an Assistant device will think it hears a word that wakes it up, but that's a very specific response.

Thanks and yeah, I also have trouble believing the events are misunderstandings by the Assistant.  Sometimes they've occurred even when the apartment was otherwise basically silent.

Hi, mdini.

It's been a while since I checked in. During that time there was an issue found with Assistant on certain devices and I'm hearing it's been resolved. Are you still seeing problems with your device, or have things improved?

Thanks,

- Jeff

Hey, everyone.
It looks like we've slowed down here again. We'll be closing up the thread unless anyone else has any input or needs anything else. If so, just let me know and we can keep this open a bit longer.
Thanks.

Hey Jeff,

apologies for the delay, thanks for checking in - I'm traveling internationally for a while for work, somehow didn't see these messages, sorry.  Since I've been away for 1.5 months, I don't know if the speaker-ghosts at still at play, I'll have to let you know once I'm back in late July.  Cheers
