Nest hub 2nd gen brightness issue

FJO

One of my nest hub gen 2 goes very dim during the day, as if the backlight intensity was reduced too much for the amount of light in the room.
In the middle of the night, the display sometimes shows very bright white clock numbers with black background, despite the display being set to turn off the screen during low light. Screen timeout is also turned on, so the display should not be on during the night at all. Ambient eq is in the default middle position and colour matching is off.
These 2 issues suggest that the light sensor may be in it's way out...

Strangely, factory resetting the hub fixes the issue for a few weeks, so the issue could also be software related and not a hardware failure, but the problem returns after a few weeks.

The only difference in settings with my other hub that hasn’t had this issue is that this one has sleep sensing turned on, maybe the sleep sensing is the source of the problem?

Firmware version and language on both hubs is the same, as listed below:

System firmware version: 12.20230611.1.67
Cast firmware: 1.70.377722
Language: en-GB

I’ve sent feedback on this, but you never get anything back from this.

Anyone had this issue and know how to fix this?

Same with mine, brightness is way too low. Something is broken for sure with it, not certain if it's a hardware or a software issue, however I am sure I am going to get it to warranty.

Have ypu tried a factory reset? That seems to fix mine for a few weeks...

I got it sorted out. Somehow the lighting setting was set to 0. Not sure how that happened, but it was no issue afteral. Thanks!

Unfortunately, that’s not the issue on mine… lighting is set to automatic and it seems to go nuts every few weeks. I think that the light sensor may be dodgy on mine, or there’s a software bug that sets the incorrect lighting level in certain conditions

Hi Alex_S,

My hub lighting is not set to 0 like BodyMan’s. This issue is not sorted out, so please don’t lock the thread. Do you have any other suggestions on how to resolve this issue?

thanks again

Hello FJO,

I’ve checked with the team, and an update is slowly rolling out on the Google Nest display’s firmware version that should fix issues with the ambient light. Let’s wait for a few more days; reboot your Google Nest Hub 2nd gen, and then check if there’s changes with its System firmware version.

Please keep me informed of any updates.

Warmly,
Alex

Hi Alex,
Looks like firmware has updated since I first posted this. The firmware version now is:

  • System firmware version: 14.20230831.4.55
  • Cast firmware: 3.71.383592
  • Language: en-GB

I always use my hubs with auto brightness on. Only one of them has this issue (the one that has sleep tracking turned on). The rest is identical on both hubs.

Is this the firmware that fixes the ambient light issue?

Thanks again
