It looks like I'm not the only one with this issue and that it isn't a recent thing either.
Despite all of the reboots, checking the firmware, changing the settings, as given as "answers" in the other threads, my display will not automatically change when it is supposed to.
In the middle of the night it's a perfect brightness that I can see the clock but it's not intrusive. But during the day I can't see anything and the brightness doesn't adjust automatically. I can manually increase the brightness so I know it isn't an issue with the display. But I've even tried shining a bright light directly at the sensor and it made no difference.
Firmware version 12.20230611.1.67
Cast version 1.70.377722
Strong WiFi, no obstructions, reboot already tried etc.

Hi Isawsomething,
Thanks for reaching out and letting us know about your Google Nest Hub 2nd gen brightness concern. We'll work together to identify the cause of the problem and find a solution. You can try to factory reset your Google Nest Hub 2nd gen. This erases all your personalized settings and restores the factory default settings. It won’t automatically reconnect to WI-Fi, and you’ll need to set it up again. Check out the article below to know more about it.
Factory reset Google Nest or Home speakers or displays

Yeah I've already done all of the steps recommended in all the other articles asking about the same problem. It doesn't work.
Looking at the dates on other users posts it seems for some their hub was working and then stopped. Mine is brand new and has never worked, suggesting that at some point after they bought theirs and before I bought mine an issue arose perhaps in the firmware based on how ubiquitous this issue seems to be. There aren't any updates currently pending for the device.

Hello there,
Chiming in, thanks for the information. Just an added question: is there anything covering the light sensor at the top of the device? Did you remove the plastic cover that is part of the device?
Please make sure that Ambient EQ is turned on. Follow the steps below to know how:
Keep us posted.
Cheers,
Muddi

The sensor is not covered, and ambient eq is switched on yes.
