Nest mini keeps disconnecting from WiFi

EliDumas
Community Member

I'm so disappointed with the Nest Mini that I'm not sure I would ever buy another Google product after this. I bought mine shortly before Christmas 2020. It worked just fine for a few months and suddenly it started disconnecting regularly, sometimes on a daily basis and some others even twice in the same day. I don't even have that many devices connected and the speaker wasn't that far away from the router: about 4 meters. I have tried everything: setting it up real close to my router, I've reset the device many times, the WiFi as well, changed the settings, nothing seems to work for longer than a few hours. It's a shame because "she" kept me company while working from home during the second lockdown and "she" really cheered me up.

Hi it is not an single device issue. It is an well known bug in the minis. I have 2 minis and 2 hubs. Only the 2 minis are disconnecting randomly even they are next to the wifi AP. i dont know the trigger. Sometimes it is good for days and then disconnecting multiple times a day. Google is doing nothing. Will switch to Alexa in the future.

I love mine so much that I just have to say to please try another one. Grab one for a few bucks from FB Marketplace. They are probably down to $15 or less by now. Yours may be defective. If you have unplugged it, reset it, tried another outlet, and did a little dance, and it is still disconnecting, then my guess is that it is perhaps defective. I have one in the living room, one in the bedroom and a Nest in the kitchen. I have given them to 3 other people and they simply love them too. For a technical response, this is what Google has to say about the issue: If your Google Home keeps disconnecting from WiFi, you either have a weak WiFi signal or there is strong interference present from other devices and/or networks nearby. To fix this problem: Try splitting your WiFi devices between your router's 2.4 GHz & 5 GHz bands. Move your Google Home to a new location.

Thanks for the feedback. I tried that as well to no avail. There seem to be several faulty devices going around as I've heard many people mentioning the same problem. Some Nest Minis seem to be doing just fine and others just don't want to stay connected. Knowing all this I don't want to risk it and I think I will eventually go for a different brand.

But let me describe a little bit more clearly. The Truth is, they are not disconnecting frim wifi. They are still connected to my wifi AP. But on vouce command they are telling that they are not connected and google home app wants to start the assignment wizard. Reboot heals the issue. But this is not how  i want to start my morning. So i will checkup Alexa for future.

Hi SG11,

Thanks for posting here in the Google Nest Community.

A few things: were there any changes made before the issue began? What is the exact message that you are getting when your Nest Mini disconnects? Do you have other Nest speakers? If so, are they experiencing the same issue? What is the exact message that you are getting when your Nest Mini disconnects? Are you getting notifications from the Google Home app that your Nest Mini got unlinked to your account?

You can do a sequential reboot. First, unplug your Nest Mini for 30 seconds, then do the same thing to your Wi-Fi router to refresh both devices and your Wi-Fi signal. Observe if this will make a difference. If that did not fix it you can perform a factory data reset to put your Nest Mini back to its default settings then set it up again as a new device. Check the link below on how to do the factory reset.

Factory reset Google Nest or Home speakers or displays

Let me know how it goes.

Juni

It worked for a couple of days and then failed again with “hold on while I connect to wifi”.
The only solution is to recycle power.

Hi SG11,

If you don't mind me asking, have you tried the steps provided above? Especially the factory reset in which reverts your Nest Mini back to its default and original settings? If not yet, please do so.

If I may ask, is your Nest Mini the only device that keeps disconnecting? If so, you can follow the steps below however, if you're unable to access your router settings, please contact your ISP or router's manufacturer to help you out:

  • Channel interference (channel congestion from too many devices, optimal channels for 2.4GHz is 1,6, or 11)
  • UPnP should be enabled.
  • AP Isolation disabled.
  • Make sure a VPN or Proxy Server is not configured on the network.
  • Confirm distance between router, setup device and Google Home are optimal.
  • MAC Filtering should not be enabled on the router.
  • Preferred DNS settings: 8.8.8.8 for the primary and 8.8.4.4 for the secondary.

Thanks,

Dan

I have tried resetting it and it was fine for a couple of days. And then started disconnecting again. Both my Alexa dot speakers don’t have this issue and have never had it. Furthermore the Nest Mini started having this issue in the last 3 months while while my router setup has not changed for over a year now.

Hey there,

Thank you for trying the reset and we were thinking that it resolved all. For confirmation, have you already tried the steps on our most recent post above? If so, how was it? May we also know when and where you buy your Nest Mini? Apologies for the questions but this may very well isolate your concern and narrow things down to get the resolution.

Looking forward to your responses.

Kind regards,

Dan

I’ve tried all your steps. Nothing worked. It keeps disconnecting from wifi every day or two.

Hi SG11,

I understand. If you don't mind, could you place your Nest Mini beside your router and monitor the status if the issue persists? While doing that, kindly check which firmware version you're on, follow these steps:

  1. Make sure your mobile device or tablet is linked to the same account as your speaker or display.
  2. Open the Google Home app.
  3. Touch and hold your device's tile.
  4. At the top right, tap Settings > Device information.
  5. Under "Technical information," find Cast firmware: X.XXX.XXXXX.

Keep me posted.

Regards,

Dan

Hi SG11,

Chiming in, to eliminate network issues, please try setting up your device using a mobile hotspot. Please note that you will need two mobile devices for this setup (one will serve as a router and the other to be used to set up your Nest Mini).

Muddi

Hey SG11,

I totally understand that troubleshooting can be frustrating, but these are the most helpful steps to further isolate the issue. Let's give them a try!
