Nest mini speaker can’t connect to Wi-Fi during setup

I’ve had a nest mini speaker for a couple of years now and it’s been connected to the same Wi-Fi for that time. However, I recently got new broadband and a new router and I now can’t setup my nest mini. It always just gets stuck when trying to connect it to Wi-Fi during the setup process. I’ve tried basically every troubleshooting idea I could find: factory resetting the speaker, moving it closer to the router, turning off and on the router, turning off and on my phone and the Wi-Fi, the google home app is the latest version and so is my iPhone SE (2020). I considered fiddling around with the dual-band settings for the router but my previous router was also dual band and it worked fine. I made sure to enable UPnP on the router settings as well but it still won’t connect. Any more ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Hi there,

I appreciate you doing the steps. Here are the settings you need to check on your router:

  • Enable: Universal Plug and Play (UPnP), multicast, Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP).
  • Disable: AP / client isolation, virtual private networks (VPNs), proxy servers, IGMP Proxy. VPNs and proxy servers should be disabled on your computer as well (if applicable).
  • If you're having trouble connecting to a 5GHz connection on a router that is running DD-WRT firmware, please change the wireless mode setting to "mixed" and then try setting your Google Nest Hub.
  • MAC address filtering: If your router has MAC address filtering enabled, you'll need to add the MAC address of your Google Nest Hub device to the list of filtered devices. You can find the MAC address by tapping on the three dotsMore menu icon located on the top right of the Google Home app during setup.
  • Security: Google Home supports WEP, WPA, and WPA2 wireless security protocols. These protocols prevent uninvited guests from connecting to your wireless network, and encrypt your private data as it is being transmitted over the airwaves.
  • If your router supports Band Steering, also referred to as Smart Steering, try disabling this during setup.

Factory reset your Google Nest Mini once more, and then do the set up. Keep us posted!

Warmly,
Kimy

Hi TEve,

We appreciate you doing all those steps. Do you have another phone or tablet/iPad you can try to use just for the initial set up? Check if using another setup device will exhibit the same behavior. If yes, try to connect Google Nest Mini to a temporary Hotspot:

  • In order to complete the setup for your Google Nest Mini with the use of a mobile hotspot, you need to have the 2 setup devices.
    • First phone will behave as the router. Turn on its data and hotspot.
    • The second device is the setup device. Connect it to the hotspot connection.
  • Factory reset your Google Nest Mini once more.
  • Using the second setup device, open the Google Home app > Follow the set up instructions > Choose the Hotspot network on the “Connect to WiFi” page.

If Google Nest Mini connects to the Hotspot just fine, the issue is likely with the new internet/router. To further isolate it, continue to the next steps:

  • While connected to the Hotspot, open the Google Home app > Devices > Tap on Google Nest Mini > Settings > Device information > WiFi > Forget WiFi.
  • Connect the setup device to your home WiFi > Do the setup steps again and try connecting to your WiFi.

Let me know how it goes.

Regards,
Alex

Hi Alex

Thanks for the suggestions! I tried the setup on my iPad but it still couldn’t connect to Wi-Fi. I also tried the hotspot but when I got to connecting the Wi-Fi, the hotspot didn’t appear so I couldn’t use that for setup (I double-checked the hotspot was still connected). If it is the router, are there settings I can change on it that may help? I have already enabled UPnP but that has not helped.

Many thanks

Hi Kimy

Thanks for the advice! I'm not an expert on this so I queried my new service provider's technical team and they changed some settings and it now works! In case anyone has a similar issue, the changed settings:

  • Enabled UPnP
  • Disabled IPv6
  • Changed password security from WPA3/WPA2 to WPA2
  • Changed DNS

Many thanks for the suggestions
