"I can't reach the internet right now" with Google Home Speakers

Pre86

I’ve been having some really annoying issues the last month and a half where one of my Google Home Speakers and one Google Home Mini speaker keep randomly disconnecting from the internet at least once per day…sometimes every other day. They will say “"I can't reach the internet right now, check your modem or router connection and try again.” They never disconnect at the same time and the only way to fix it is to unplug and replug them in. I am using all Google Home/ Nest products including Nest Wifi. I believe it has something to do with a bad update because at first it was just the Goggle Home and less than a month later the Home Mini started acting up. I’ve tried removing them from the home, resetting them and rebooting my network to no avail. It is incredibly annoying and I wanted to see if anyone else was experiencing these issues or has a solution. Thanks!

Hi Pre86,

I’m sorry to hear about the trouble you’re experiencing with your Google Home devices. Let’s further look into it. Try to factory reset one of the Google Home speakers, and then set it up. Just to isolate this, move it closer to the main router. Monitor its behavior and let us know how it goes.

Alex

Hi,

I tried all of the steps and unfortunately they keep exhibiting the same behavior. It is highly inconsistent and I will go a few days where it's fine, then all of a sudden one of the speakers will being exhibiting the behavior. One change is that it now just says "Hang on while I get connected to Wifi" instead of “I can't reach the internet right now, check your modem or router connection and try again.”

This seems to be a common problem with Google Home devices and as far as I can see there has never been a satisfactory solution. People seemingly give up because they don’t get any help and then mods close the threads. I’ve had the issue for the last couple of years. No other device in my home disconnects like it.

Everything was working great for a day. Now two of my google homes say they can’t reach the internet. Tonight I imagine the problem will go away…only to later return. I’m using Nest Wi-Fi…this doesn’t make sense. I do not think this is a hardware issue otherwise they wouldn’t work at all. This feels like a software issue. I’m losing patience with Google Home.

Hey folks,

Chiming in: to further isolate the issue, try setting up your device using a mobile hotspot. Please note that you will need two mobile devices for this setup (one will serve as a router, and the other will be used to set up your Google speaker).

Keep us posted.

Cheers,

Muddi

Hi everyone,

I don't want to be a nudge, but I'd like to check if you were able to get your device working. Feel free to reach back if you still need help.

Cheers,

Muddi

It will work for a couple of days and then do the same thing. It’s been happening for a couple of years. Different locations, different buildings, different routers. Always the same, very intermittent.

Hi folks,

@Pre86, @FrustartedUser, this is not the experience we want you to have; let us help you. A few questions: aside from the mentioned Google Home Mini, which Nest speakers are we working with? Were there any recent changes made?

It would help a lot if you could do a sequential reboot first:

  1. Unplug the power cord from your router, followed by your Nest speakers.
  2. Plug them back in after 3 minutes.
  3. Restarting your phone might also help.

Also, to eliminate network issues, please try setting up your device using a mobile hotspot. Please note that you will need two mobile devices for this setup (one to serve as a router and the other to be used to set up your Google Home or Nest devices). Once done, check if your device will have the same behavior.

If the issue persists, you can revert your Nest devices to their default settings by doing a factory reset. Follow the steps in this guide: Factory reset Google Nest or Home speakers or displays

Let us know how it goes for us to isolate whether its a speaker issue or a router concern.

Best,

Dan

Everything seems to be working okay now. I’ll check back in next week to report if it stays that way. Thank you all.

Hi there,

Thanks for the update. We’ll look forward to your update.

FrustartedUser, this certainly hasn’t been easy for you. Just to confirm, when you said other devices you have in your home do not disconnect like your Google Home, are you referring to other Google Home speakers/displays? If not, kindly try configuring your router settings:

  • Channel interference (channel congestion from too many devices, optimal channels for 2.4GHz is 1,6, or 11)
  • Change DNS addresses: 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4
  • If IPv6 is enabled, try disabling it for the meantime
  • Reboot the router and your Google Home device

Kind regards,
Alex
