Nest mini won't stream CBC Music Toronto (94.1 CBL-FM). Again. May 2023.

Just after the Victoria Day holiday my speaker stopped playing CBC Music (94.1 FM in Toronto, formerly known as CBC Radio 2).

When I give the command "Hey Google, please stream CBC Music" it'll play CBC1 in Halifax, Nova Scotia (this is a different part of the country.)

This started after the Victoria Day long weekend.

There are no issues when I give the same command to my phone, just the mini speaker.

Hi Zed,

This is not the experience I want you to have, let me help you. A few questions: were there any recent changes made? I would just like to verify, could you please tell me if this is happening only using a specific radio station in CBC in your area?

It would help a lot if you could do a sequential reboot first:

  1. Unplug the power cord of your router, followed by your Nest speakers.
  2. Plug them back in after 3 minutes.
  3. Restarting your phone might also help.

Once done, try these steps:

  1. If your speaker or display doesn't play the radio station that you requested, be more specific with your query, or ask for the station in a different way, using name, frequency or call sign.
  2. If the request is not properly answered, try to add 'on TuneIn' or “on iHeartRadio” to the query. For example: 'Play BBC Radio on TuneIn', or  "Play ESPN Radio on iHeartRadio".
  3. If the provided station is inaccurate when asking for frequency, try to add the name of a nearby city. For example: 'Play 102.6 FM London'

See this guide for more information.

Keep me posted.

Best,

Dan

Hello Dan,

Thank you for reaching out to me.

I did the sequential reboot as you recommended and restarted my phone, too.

Unfortunately there was no change in the outcome when I gave the instructions to my Google Nest Mini (2019 model).

This service interruption happened in the past  -- in October 2021 and June 2022. Others were experiencing similar issues, then I ended up tweeting for help and the issue was resolved. Not this time, not yet.

I live in Toronto, Canada. The command given to the Google Nest Mini is specific: "Hey Google, please stream CBC Music." Then the reply is "Streaming CBL FM..." (those are the call letters for the CBC Music station in Toronto (formerly known as CBC Radio 2). Unfortunately, the device streams the Halifax CBC Radio 1 station. A different part of the country, in a different time zone, with different programming.

I also try, "Hey Google, please stream 94.1 FM, (in) Toronto." The reply is the same, "Streaming CBLFM..." but it streams the Halifax CBC1 station.

As a test, I gave the command to my phone and there were no issues.

For some reason this started around the Victoria Day long weekend in Canada.

Hello Zed,

Apologies for the delay and we appreciate all your efforts. We'd like to take a look at the firmware version of your Nest Mini. Follow the steps below:

  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  2. Touch and hold your device's tile.
  3. Tap Settings and then Device information.
  4. Under "Technical information," check for Cast firmware: "X.XXX.XXXXX." If the device is on Fuchsia, check for System firmware version: "X.XXXXXXXX.X.XXXXXXX"

Also, try to revert your Nest Mini to its default settings by doing a factory reset. Follow the steps on this link: Factory reset Google Nest or Home speakers or displays.

Cheers,

Dan
