News stopped showing videos

NickJavs

My Nest Hub plays a News playlist in the morning, consisting of BBC, SKY, CNBC, and CNBC Tech Check.  I used to see video on a few of theses channels, but now they are all just audio.  Is this a media change that has been implemented, or is it a setting change?

Hi everyone,

Thanks for bringing this up.

@NickJavs, and @Cy5dude could you please tell us when did you notice this? Also, when it tries to play a news playlist, which of the news channels are showing pure audio? Have you already tried some steps after you have experienced this?

Best,

Princess

Hi Princess

It started 2 weeks ago

NPR

Bloomberg

Reuters

DW Noticias

All of those use to have a video feed now is just audio, I restarted the device but still not working.

Thank you.

Hi Princess

Thanks for the reply.  I noticed it about 3-4 weeks ago. Before this issue, my news list was as follows:

BBC - Audio Only

Sky News - Video

DW Newsbrief - Video

CNBC - Video

CNBC Tech Check - Video

As of about 3-4 weeks ago, all of these channels now play Audio only.

Thanks for looking into this.

I have a number of news sources setup in my Google Assistant that used to play on my Nest Hubs along with the accompanying video (Reuters TV, Sky News, DW Newsbrief and France 24 - In the Press). Previously each news source that was accompanied by video was denoted in the description that it would play on supported displays but this is no longer the case. When I ask Google to play the news on a display it still plays the audio but no video. I don't believe this is just an issue for me as I have rebooted and factory reset the devices, reselected news sources, confirmed the same thing happens for other users.
Can Google confirm if they have removed this feature if it is not a bug and suggest any suitable news alternatives that will allow video to play alongside audio for chosen news sources?

Well, it was working!  I had videos again for about a week.  Now it’s only Audio playing.  What’s going on Google!?!?

Hello everyone,

Showing news videos is already sorted out. For those who are still experiencing this, kindly perform a complete reset to your device and see if this would fix the issue.

Keep us posted.

Hi CHLAA,

My apologies for the delayed response. It's the radio stations and providers like BBC and Sky. Let us know if you have other concerns, otherwise, I'll close the thread after 24 hours.

It can't be all the individual media providers having simultaneous issues with the Google integration unless it is the Google integration that is at fault either a bug or an API update that the the providers had to adapt to.

Given it stops working for everyone this would suggest it is either an issue with the Google News service or the firmware. A full reset would fix this for firmware issues only and then it would be temporary fix until the buggy firmware was reinstalled. It would be really good if we could get confirmation from Google to know where the issue lies to prevent any unnecessary resets.

Yes it stopped working, then it came back last week and now again gone today. What's going on.

It started working again since few days. Hopefully no hiccup again.

Hi Muddi,

It would be good to get confirmation of the root cause of the problem. If this was an issue with the Google News service I wouldn't want users unnecessarily resetting their devices if they come across this thread if it happens again. Do you have access to the change logs for the releases of the hub firmware or Google News service to check?

Thanks

Luke

Hey everyone,

Sorry for the delays. We have determined that the issue was caused by our partner's integration with the Google Home/Nest devices. Now that the problem has been resolved, we can consider this thread closed. If you have any new issues, updates, or discussion topics, please feel free to start a new thread.

@CHLAA: We don't have an access to the change logs. Also, we don't have anything else to share right now, but stay tuned for more news and updates.

Cheers,

Muddi

@Muddi who is the partner providing the integration? I had expected it was Google that was providing a common interface which the news providers could develop their media services against.
