No longer able to turn off TV - "Sorry, I don't know where to play the video"

So I used to be able to turn off my living room TV...
"Hey Google, turn off the living room TV"

It would do it without issue.

Now, all of a sudden, I'm getting the following error,
"Sorry, I don't know where to play the video.  Please tell me the exact name of the screen."

What the hell?

Amazon will turn it off as will Samsung Smart Things.

What is going on?

Any help would be appreciated.  Thank you!

ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS SET THE TV NAME TO JUST TV!!!.. OK LET ME EXPLAIN.

Assuming you organize your google devices by room here's what I had before:

[Master Bedroom]

  • Master Bedroom Speaker
  • Master Bedroom TV
  • Master Bedroom Light

[Living Room]

  • Living Room Speaker
  • Living Room TV
  • Living Room Light

ALL I DID WAS SET THE LIVING ROOM TV TO JUST "TV" AND IT WORKED!!! I didn't adjust the Master Bedroom one.

Nope, it didn't work...

Turn off Family Room TV doesn't work but Turn off Family Room TV in Family Room works...  Note the device I use to control the TV is a nest camera not a proper nest speaker.

Hmm, if <command> <device> in <room> works, I may just adjust my routine to automatically append the room name, such that "Turn off TV" converts to "Turn off TV in Family Room" before execution.

I’ve owned a NestHub Max for over a year. We use it to watch YouTube TV. All of the sudden I am getting the same message you are and are now no longer able to watch tv. So frustrating this is the only reason why we bought the device.

Hi folks,

How very interesting! Let me help you find the solution for your concern. A few questions, aside from the mentioned Nest Hub Max, what other Nest devices and TV are affected? It would help a lot if you refresh the connection first. Do a sequential reboot by unplugging and re-plugging the power of your router followed by your Nest speakers. Restarting your phone might also help.

Best,

Dan
