Are only the Nest Doorbells & Cameras able to transmit LIVE video feed to the Google Nest Hub (and Chromecast)?

By the way, I searched Reddit as it usually has a solution if you look enough and I found the workaround.  Not sure if I'm willing to go to this length (using the 3rd party Zapier Zap link) as I assume it doesn't cover reminders.

Per Reddit User:

So I spent all day fixing this because Google refuses to let G-Suite accounts have the same privileges as a normal gmail account. It won't even allow the administrator (me) to change the privileges. Here is how I made everything work:

  1. start a new google home with the nest gmail account

  2. take all the google nest routers, hubs, and home hub and reset them to factory in the app

  3. put all the above devices into the new google home app account that has the free gmail account as admin.

  4. here are the tricky parts.... my google photos is attached to my g-suite account. The free gmail account doesn't have enough space anyway. I shared the pictures I wanted to use from the g-suite account to a new google photos account under the nest gmail.

  5. I was able to make this shared folder where the nest gmail pulls pictures to show in the hub, one problem fixed.

  6. The ring doorbell, thermostats, kasa etc. are also now working on the home hub. Two problems fixed.

  7. Here is the tricky one. The home hub would not show my g-suite calendar, even though I shared it with my nest gmail account. I had to use a free zapier account and I made a zap that every time a new entry was made in my gsuite calendar it would be auto added to my nest calendar. This isn't perfect because I can't delete or change in my g-suite and have it deleted or changed in my nest gmail calendar, but it is better than nothing. Three problems fixed, and now waiting to see what else pops up that I need to find a workaround for. All because Google hates its paying customers.

This took me the better part of a day. If google would actually give written instructions with their products or somehow informed me of the g-suite issues ahead of time it would have saved a lot of frustration. And quite honestly I probably wouldn't have bought into their ecosystem. But at some point you have swam so far from shore it is easier to just keep on swimming.

Hi there,

Some other brands are also able to display video on Google Nest displays and Chromecast devices.

Google just recently announced compatibility with Amazon products....

Yes, I'm an IT Specialist and don't run into technical issues I can't figure out very often.

I have a Nest Doorbell - Battery version.  I am able to speak into my Chromecast for Google TV remote and tell to stream the doorbell video to my TV.  I'm also getting notifications and able to view video (live and recorded) on the Google Home App on my Smartphone.

However I still cannot figure out how to get the same motion notifications and live video for the doorbell on my Google Nest Hub Max.  I'd actually prefer that the Nest Hub Max automatically show the live view of the doorbell when motion is detected or the doorbell is pressed.  If I have to ask the hub to stream it manually that would be better than nothing.

One of the challenges is my main Google account is a Google workspaces (business) account. This account has my calendar and Google Photos and is setup with my Google Nest Hub Max so I get calendar notifications and photo slide show.  However I've learned over the years certain services only work with personal (non business) Google accounts (some sort of business security considerations if I remember).  So I have a separate personal Gmail account when I can't use my Google Workspaces Business Account with a service or device.  I can add the doorbell to Google Home under the personal Gmail account but I can't add it to Google Home under my primary email that is the Google Workspaces Business account.  If this is not possible, then I would assume it is then impossible to stream the live video to the Google Nest Hub Max since it is registered to my Google Workspaces Business account.

Interestingly, some devices I can 'share' with both accounts under Google Home. My Chromecast for Google TV is registered to my personal account but somehow in the past I was able to share it so it shows up in the Home App under my Google Workspaces Business account (along with my smart light bulbs).  However I see no way to 'share' the doorbell registered under my personal Google Gmail account with my Google Workspaces Business Account in the Home App.  If I use the share function in the Home app it says it can't send the invite both to and from both accounts.

I also see that the Google Nest Doorbell BATTERY stream to Nest Hub function was previously discontinued and no longer worked but apparently there was an announcement on July 22, 2022 from Google it would be coming back.  Is that feature even available yet?

Hey JJZee,

We understand how important this is for you. You can use a business account to your device however, you can only use a limited number of features because of the restrictions of your account. Your devices also need to be set up using the same Google Account so that can communicate with each other. Also, certain accounts don't have the ability to be a home member. You can't invite the following accounts:

  • Google Workspace (G Suite) accounts.
  • Google Account for children under 13 (or the applicable age in the customer's country)

On the other hand, streaming your doorbell on your Nest Hub is supported. Check this guide for more information.

Alex

To be honest, I don't think you fully comprehended my lengthy post from last Tuesday and just send me whatever boiler plate support suggestion info/links your customer service system tells you to.  I believe the bottom line is the Nest Doorbell Battery CANNOT be setup with a GSuite account.  As I explained at length before, you go through all the steps and the very last step when it goes to add it, it says "Invalid request argument received."

This does NOT happen when I attempt to add the doorbell to my non-GSuite account. But once again, as I explained, my Google Calendar, Reminders, Photos are associated with my GSuite account I need to see my calendar, reminders, and photos on my Google Hub Max from that account.  Do the doorbell is linked to my non-Gsuite account and my Hub Max is setup on my Gsuite account.

And as you pointed out, you can't invite Gsuite accounts to the non Gsuite Google Home.

Interestingly I CAN see my Hub Max Listed as devices on my NON Gsuite Account, the same account the doorbell is on, but the account icon in the upper right of my Hub Max screen is my GSuite account which is expected is that is the account I want calendar/reminders/photos displayed on the hub max.  Although if I click through to the Hub Max device from the Non_Gsuite account, all I can do is adjust the treble and bass, the photo frame settings page is blank and that is also not surprising since the photos for the photo frame come from Gsuite photos account.

I think the only way to view the doorbell on the hub max would be to reset the Hub Max, set it up using the Non-Guite account that the Doorbell is registered on. But then I'd lose calendar and reminder notifications on the Hub Max for my Gsuite account.

The restrictions on Gsuite accounts with certain devices have been a thorn in the side of a lot of users for a long time.

So I went ahead and reconfigured my Hub Max to be associated with my gmail instead of Google Workspaces account.  Doorbell now instantly shows on the Hub Max. Yay! But I forgot about step 7 and can't get calendar info or notifications on the calendar I shared from my workspace account.  The fact the Zapier Zap appears to only add appointments and not delete or change them when they are changed on the source calendar is a BIG bummer.  I'm thinking the only way to fix this is going to make my gmail calendar my primary calendar and share it to my workspace account.  Hope that works.  But if not, I'll start a separate thread about calendar integration.

Hi JJZee,

Thanks for updating the Community forum of your resolution — it's a big help! Please note that calendars created from a Google Workspace domain (formerly GSuite) are not officially supported. It may or may not work, so we recommend using regular Gmail instead.
