Picking which device Assistant responds on

MrSkips
Community Member

I have a hub and 3 speakers, but I can't seem to figure out how to make the hub the default for voice commands. I have tried turning down the sensitivity on the speakers and only standing in front of the hub, but even that isn't 100%. I have tried looking in the Home app and the Assistant app, but neither seem to have what I'm looking for. Does anyone know which setting this would be under?

Hi MrSkips,

We're sorry to hear about this experience. Let's sort this out by trying some steps on this link: https://goo.gle/3LbtmYg

Also, please make sure that both speakers and Google Assistant devices are using the same Google account.

Lastly, by default, your device's will respond as long as it hears "OK Google" or "Hey Google" depending on its location from each other.

Best,

Princess

All devices are added to the same google home so they are all linked to the same account. I'm the only person in the home.

That article only addresses your phone and a nest product may both respond, but the phone should go back to sleep. My phone responding isn't an issue.

The issue is other devices responding to 'ok google' even when standing right in front of the hub. The next closest device (nest audio) is across the room with the sensitivity set to negative 2 and that is the device that responds most often. The other device (nest mini) that commonly responds is in another room completely.

Hi MrSkips,

Thanks for the detailed info. Let's go ahead and uninstall/reinstall the Google App from your phone. Once done, retrain your voice match and let's see if this would make any changes on its behavior.

  1. Make sure your mobile device or tablet is connected to the same Wi-Fi network or linked to the same account as your speaker or display.
  2. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  3. At the top right, tap your account.
  4. Verify that the Google Account shown is the one linked to your Nest speaker or display. To switch accounts, tap another account or Add another account.
  5. Tap Assistant settings and then Voice match. You'll find a list of devices that are using Voice Match.

From here, you can:

  • Retrain your voice model, if needed.
  • Invite others to set up Voice Match on shared devices.
  • Remove a shared device by tapping the X. This removes your Google Account (and Voice Match) from the device.
  • Add new shared devices.

Let us know how it goes.

Best,

Princess

All of the suggestions seem to be if the hub doesn't respond at all, which is not the issue. I can get it to respond, but the issue is there is no consistency on which device responds to voice commands.

All devices are on the same network. I am the only one in the home and the home is only linked to one email. And I have had to retrain my voice every time a new device has been added. None of these suggestions have helped or really acknowledged the actual issue. To reiterate, when multiple devices hear me, there is no consistency in which one responds.

I just want to make it so if multiple devices hear me, ONLY the hub responds.

Hey MrSkips,

Please note that it's normal that all your devices will react to the wake word. What's not normal is if multiple devices will do the command at the same time. You can try adjusting the sensitivity of your device to "Hey Google, or "Ok Google."

Follow the steps below or visit this link for more information.

  1. Open the Google Home app.
  2. Tap the device of the preferred speaker or display.
  3. At the top right, tap Settings > Audio > “Hey Google” sensitivity.
  4. Use the slider to raise or lower the device's sensitivity to make it more or less responsive to "Hey Google".

Keep us posted.

Cheers,

Muddi
