Playing YouTube Music is very buggy

Why does a Google device have such difficulty playing playlists from Google's media site?

I ask my Nest Hub to play the same YouTube Music playlist every night. The playlist is a few of those 8-hour "help you sleep" things that have ethereal chord changes based around frequencies that are supposed to help you stay asleep.

Tonight, about 3.5 hours after requesting this playlist, I woke up to the sound of crickets. For some reason, the Hub had stopped playing my playlist and was now playing a file that was the sound of thousands of crickets chirping. I can't stand the sound of crickets chirping...so I tried to get it to go back to my playlist. No matter what command I gave it, it just kept playing the sound of crickets, until it decided it was going to play some pop song by a group I've never heard of (and I don't know how it got it from the command I was giving). By this time, I was so frustrated trying to get the Hub to do what I requested that I just told it to stop and got up.

I don't think you're taking this device very seriously. There should be a YouTube Music app on the Hub that works just like when you "Install YouTube Music" on your desktop from Chrome. There's no reason I have to do anything other than touch the screen a couple times to get whatever playlist or song I want to hear started.

Hi, @QPhysics137!

Thank you so much for posting in the community. I understand how frustrating it is when your Nest Hub isn’t playing the correct playlist. I’m happy to assist you!

I appreciate the detailed information. To provide you with the best assistance, please answer the following information:

  • Did you purchase this device in the same country where you are currently?
  • Does this inconvenience only occur with a specific playlist, or does it happen with other playlists or songs as well?
  • Do you have a YouTube Premium?
  • Do you share your Google Home app with other members of your household? If so, verify if you have set any household routine in your home. To learn more about how household routines work, you can see this article: Household Routines.

In the meantime, let’s try the following steps:

If none of the above steps resolve the inconvenience, please try to log into your YouTube account and then try relinking it. Make sure YouTube is set as your default music service. For instructions, refer to the following link: Link your music services and set your default service. Also, rename the current playlist or try creating a new one.

Please let me know how it goes.

Best regards,

Ana

• Did you purchase this device in the same country where you are currently?
Yes, USA.

• Does this inconvenience only occur with a specific playlist, or does it happen with other playlists or songs as well?
This is the only playlist I ever request on this device.
I sometimes, but not often, ask for weather reports in the morning, but this device is almost exclusively for playing music to help me sleep.

• Do you have a YouTube Premium?
Yes

• Do you share your Google Home app with other members of your household?
No, I do not share, everyone has their own Google account and Home app.

• Try using different or advanced voice commands to play your playlist on YouTube Premium. You can check out this article: Listen to music on Google Nest speakers and displays.
I've read that and used it. I start the playlist with a command I got from that page.

• Ensure that Restricted Mode is turned off in your YouTube account. You can find instructions here: Turn Restricted Mode on or off on YouTube.
It is off.

• Verify that the Google account linked to your speaker is the same one you're using on your mobile device. For reference, you can check out this article: Check which Google account is linked to a speaker or display.
It is. I've reset the device a couple times and logged back in trying to fix this problem.

If none of the above steps resolve the inconvenience, please try to log into your YouTube account and then try relinking it. Make sure YouTube is set as your default music service.
It's YouTube Music.

Hi, @QPhysics137!

Thank you so much for your response and resetting the device. I’m truly sorry the inconvenience persists. I’m happy to assist you further.

Since you've already tried some troubleshooting steps, the next best step would be to perform a factory reset; you can find instructions in this article: Factory reset Google Nest or Home speakers or displays. Please note that this will erase all your settings, so be sure to back up any important data beforehand. You can find instructions on how to set up your device again here: Set up your Google Nest or Home speaker or display.

Please let me know how it goes.

Best regards,

Ana

You do understand that the boilerplate responses you're spewing have NOTHING to do with the issue I reported, right?

Did you even read my post, or were there a few keywords that you used to look up the copy/paste "troubleshooting steps" that are completely meaningless to THE THING SWITCHING TO THE SOUND OF CRICKETS CHIRPING IN THE MIDDLE OF AN 8-HOUR-LONG RELAXATION SONG FILE?

I understand that there are a limited number of people responding to all these posts, but responding with meaningless, unrelated stuff is worse than not responding at all. Someone who may have understood and could help with the issue won't bother looking because there are responses posted to this and there are a lot out there that need responses.

Hi, @QPhysics137!

Thank you for your prompt response. I understand that the speaker is playing cricket sounds instead of the desired audio. While the troubleshooting steps can be repetitive, they are necessary to isolate the issue. Performing a factory reset will refresh the system, potentially resolving any glitches and helping us identify why the correct file isn't playing.

I'd be grateful if you could perform a factory reset on your Google Nest speaker and then set up the Google Nest speaker again.

Please let me know how it goes.

Best regards,

Ana
