Problem using Google Nest with my YouTube music library

RoyWA
Community Member

My son is blind and could play music uploaded to his YouTube music library using voice commands to his Google Nest Mini saying something like "OK Google play ... from my YouTube music library". He told me this has stopped working and he now gets a message something like "playing specific songs is only possible with a YouTube Premium Account. His need is just to play songs uploaded to his YouTube Music library using voice because of his disability.

Can anyone tell me if something has changed recently or maybe suggest what might have happened. I have tried resetting his Goofle Nest and I can see his uploaded music on YouTube Music and clearly his Google Nest responds to his voice so I am really struggling.

Hi RoyWA,

Thank you for reaching out to our community.

I’m sorry to hear that your son can’t continue playing music uploaded to his YouTube music library using voice commands to his Google Nest Mini, because now he is getting a message saying something like, "Playing specific songs is only possible with a YouTube Premium account. No worries; help is here.

Before I start further troubleshooting, let me ask you a few questions:

  • What mobile device are you using to set up your Google Nest Mini speaker?
  • Have you tried to reboot your mobile device?
  • Have you tried to reboot the Google Nest Mini speaker?
  • Are you using the latest version of the Google Home app?
  • Is your YouTube Music app up to date?
  • Could you please verify if the Google account that you have in your Google Home app is the same one that you linked to the Google Nest Mini speaker.?

Thanks for your kind attention; I will be looking forward to your response.

Best regards,

Virna

The mobile device is an iPhone 13 Pro Max with IOS version 18.1.1
I tried rebooting the mobile phone
I tried rebooting the Google Nest
I tried uninstalling YouTube Music and re-installing from the App Store (version 7.29.1)
I tried uninstalling Google Home and re-installing from the App Store
I checked that Google Home app uses my son's email account and reconnected the Google Nest to the Google Home app following a reset of the device. I set the default music to YouTube Music. (Nest Firmware version shown as 437716)
Unfortunately Google Nest responds as described previously.

Hi RoyWA,

Thank you for taking the time to respond to my questions. This information allows me to provide you with better assistance to resolve the inconvenience your son is facing. I understand how frustrating it is for your son to no longer be able to access their YouTube Music library, and it is my pleasure to assist you with this concern.

Based on the information you shared with us, I can recommend trying the following steps:

  1. Please check if “Restricted Mode” settings are turned on. If it is enabled, please turn it off. You can find the instructions here. Restrict content on your Google Nest speakers and displays.
  2. Confirm your Google Nest Mini Speaker and the Google Home app share the same Google account. Here are the instructions: Check which Google Account is linked to a speaker or display.
  3. Confirm the default music provider is set up correctly in the Google Home app: Link your music services and set your default service.

If the issue persists, it will be necessary to perform the factory reset and set up your Google Nest Mini device.

Please let me know how it goes.

Best regards,

Virna
