Problems with Google Home app

I’ve purchased 4 Google Nest speakers for various rooms around the house and I’d like to add playlists and personalise them. I have 3 powerful desktop pc’s, one for gaming, another for everyday use and the third is a backup, all of them are wi-fi enabled. I also have a number of wi-fi tablets and a wi-fi Windows laptop(I’m not bragging by the way, I just keep buying the wrong stuff). I tried to download the Google Home app which is needed for the Nest speakers, but in all cases I got the message that my equipment wasn’t suitable for the Home app. I did an internet search and found out that I needed a Chrome-cast device to run Google Home so I have just purchased a Lenovo Ideapad Chromebook to run Google apps but I’m still getting the message that the equipment isn’t suitable even though it is made specifically to run all Google apps. I was advised instead to download something called Google Go ( I think it’s called that ) but I can’t see anywhere on this app that will allow me to change my speaker settings.

Can you tell me what is going wrong here. I don’t need a smart phone as I already have many internet devices. The mobile phone that I have is just that, a phone, and doesn’t connect to the internet. Can you tell me how I can make changes to these Nest speakers. Please be aware that I’m 72 yrs old and I struggle with this kind of tech so please keep answers as simple as possible. Thank you. Antony Burton-Pye.

I'm the opposite. I hate using new PCs. Anything after Windows 7 was useless to me.

By the way, do you have any Google Nest Hubs (display)?

How to MUTE Spotify Introduction before a playlist starts with Google (Nest Hubs only)...

But I Googled "google home app on pc"

Thank you for the reply but I don't think it helped me with my particular problem and no I don't have a google nest display, just the speakers. Thanks anyway. Antony.

Hi @Antony1953,

Thank you for posting in the community. I understand you'd like to set up your Google Nest speakers to add playlists and personalize them, and that you're experiencing some difficulties since you've been trying to set them up with different Wi-Fi-enabled devices. I'd be glad to assist you.

Based on the error message you're getting ("the equipment isn't suitable for the Home app"), it's always recommended to have a smartphone with the necessary characteristics in order to set up Google Nest speakers, as shown in the article Set up your Google Nest or Home speaker or display. You may find tips on the internet explaining how to set up Google Nest speakers with different devices. However, using an Android phone, a tablet, or an iOS device that meets the requirements is the best option for the setup process. You can continue managing your devices in the Google Home app and set up features from other devices, such as your computers or your Lenovo IdeaPad Chromebook, as long as your Google Nest speakers were already added using an Android phone, a tablet, or an iOS device.

If you have a phone that doesn't connect to the internet, I recommend trying to set up your Google Nest speakers from a friend's or relative's phone using your Google account. Once your devices are set up in the Google Home app, you can remove your account from the phone you used for setup. The devices will remain associated with your account and won't be removed, allowing you to manage them in the Google Home app from your other devices (such as desktop PCs, your Lenovo IdeaPad Chromebook, etc.).

Let me know if you have any further questions.

Regards,

Anders

Hello Anders,

Thank you for replying. I only have one friend with a mobile phone that connects to the internet, so I will have to ask him to pop around and do what you said. Just in case he doesn't know what to do, would you mind telling me, in simple terms an idiot can understand, how I do this ( I'm 72 and I'm terrible at this sort of thing ). You will need to tell me step by step what we do, think of me as a four-year-old child and don't assume I'll understand any tech speak. Also you say that I can then manage my speakers from this new Chromebook I've purchased, will that be straightforward and easy as well?

Once again, thank you very much for helping me with this. I'm looking forward to setting up my speakers the way I want them.

Antony

Hi @Antony1953,

Thank you for replying. I'll make sure to provide the information and steps needed to set up your Google Nest speakers once you get the chance to set them up through a smartphone that meets the requirements.

In order to set up your Google Nest speakers in the Google Home app, follow the steps below:

  1. Make sure your Google Nest speakers are showing the correct color of the lights, indicating they are ready to be set up.
    • Depending on the model of your Google Nest speakers, the lights may be different for the set up process, but you can compare them with the ones in the article Learn about the lights on your speaker.
  2. Set up your Google Nest Speakers in the Google Home app:
    • Plug in your Nest speaker or display.
      • If the device has been used before, factory reset your speaker or display before you continue. Learn how to factory reset your speaker or display.
    • On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Home app.
      • If you haven't set up a home, tap Create home > enter a nickname for your home > enter an address (optional) > tap Next.
      • Tap the name of your home > Next.
    • Tap Devices > Add > Google Nest or partner device.
    • Choose the home you want to add your device to.
    • Follow the in-app steps.
  3. Finish setting up your Google Nest speakers.
    • After you connect your Nest speaker or display to Wi-Fi, follow the in-app steps to customize your device. You can opt out of some settings, like Voice Match and personal results.

You can learn more about this process by visiting the article Set up your Google Nest or Home speaker or display.

Keep me posted.

Regards,

Anders
