Products keep disconnecting nest mini and nest hub

I’ve wiped and readded. It’s like random devices stop working. From Wi-Fi disconnect continuously to I do not understand. They were working fine and in the last month it’s gone downhill. No internet is changed. It’s google issues. It’s getting old resetting it and having it reset it.

Hi Valentine13,

Thanks for visiting the Community.

I know how challenging it is when your Google Nest Mini and Hub keeps on disconnecting from your network. Let's try to get to the bottom of this.

A few questions:

  • When did the issue start?
  • How far are your devices from your router?
  • Have you changed any settings on your router lately?
  • What is the make and model of your router?
  • Do you have a WiFi repeater or extender?

Let's try these steps below:

  1. Move your Nest Mini and Nest Hub within 15-20 ft. away from the router to get enough signal from your network.
  2. Reboot your devices and router by disconnecting them from the power source and leave them unplugged for 1 minute. Once done, plug them back one at a time with intervals.

Let me know how it goes.

Cheers,

Muddi

Hi there,

It's me again. I want to make sure you're all good — how did the steps go?

Cheers,

Muddi

Issue started 6 weeks ago. Everything has been rebooted. No internet changes. It was set up before Christmas and all great. 6 weeks ago everything started acting up. I just rebooted again to see if it helps. Basically doesn’t matter where it is. Once they go to sleep they lose connection. The scan code comes up on the hub that’s less than 6 months old. Sometimes they come back. Sometimes I have to unplug and reset. It’s a hub and random minis. One hub and the minis will rotate around. I’ll unplug, wipe, reset the device, reset the internet and it starts again in the morning.

everything was great until about 6 weeks ago. The kitchen hub started disconnecting every time it goes to sleep. I sit it next to router and same thing happens. The minis rotate around saying it can’t reach the internet. The mini right next to it will be connected (I’m doing renovations). There are no internet issues. I have a very expensive Asus router no Wi-Fi repeaters. I have very fast internet.

the other night it was acting like it was possessed and couldn’t remember how voices worked. It randomly would turn off 5 things not grouped. It would turn on random things. If wiping and resetting doesn’t fix when it worked before what is next.

besides wiping and starting over which I’ve done I don’t know how to fix this.

Hello Valentine13,

Sorry for the delays. To further isolate the issue, try setting up one of your devices using a mobile hotspot. Please note that you will need two mobile devices for this setup (one will serve as a router and the other to be used to set up your Nest Hub or Google Mini).

Keep us posted.

Muddi

Can you clarify setting up under hotspot. I can have my phone as a hot spot but Google home won’t see it when trying up connect. I looked under Wi-Fi and it’s there.

i switched from Amazon dot to Google home. Exact same home network and set up. Never had disconnecting. Today the back mini disconnected and needs to be wiped again. It no longer connects. The living room hub has Wi-Fi and responds “something went wrong try again later”.

Hey Valentine13,

Make sure to use two phones/tablets for you to set up your speaker to a mobile hotspot. Follow the steps below to know how:

  1. Turn on the mobile hotspot on your first device.
  2. On the other device, open that device's list of Wi-Fi options.
  3. Pick your phone's hotspot name.
  4. Enter your phone's hotspot password.
  5. Click Connect. Once connected, you can now set up your speaker on the Google Home app.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Muddi

I’ve tried this several times. iPhone hotspot will not allow me to choose as the Wi-Fi when I’m connecting the device. The devices mainly hubs now randomly tend to say “please ask your question in a few minutes”.

I am using an Asus RT-AX92U router.  I have 3 Wi-Fi bands. All smart devices connected to google are on their own 2.4 ghz channel on wpa2 (wpa3 or mixed mode can cause issues). It’s set to 20 mhz and channel 1. All other devices are on my 5ghz channels. TVs and such are on one of the 5ghz channels to lower congestion.

edit: I run about 475mbps download on speed test.

Hi Valentine13,

I appreciate all the information that you've shared. To confirm, is IPv6 enabled on your router? Also, are your Nest Mini and Hub connected to the 2.4 GHz?

Cheers,

Muddi

Yes ivp6 is enabled. Nest and minis are on 2.4. If they should be 5.0 I can put them on the first 5 ghz channel. I can switch them all over and we can see if that fixes things.

Hey Valentine13,

Sounds like a good plan! Can we try to disable the IPv6 first to check if your devices will still have the same behavior? If it's still the same, we can move to the other steps, but I suggest that you try it on a single device first.

Keep us posted.

Hey Sarrukin,

Have you tried setting up your device to a different network to see if it will have the same issue?

I reset everything again just now and all was connected. The nest all of a sudden said it couldn’t answer “what time is it” when the time was showing and the exact words were showing on the screen.

Same is happening to my hub. Daily disconnecting from wifi requiring a reboot.

Hey Sarrukin,

Have you had the chance to check if IPv6 is enabled on your router?

IPv6 is disabled. Device is connected to a Wifi6 AP at 5ghz that is 5 feet away with cat6 backhaul. Of my 26 devices, only the nest hub drops.

Hi Sarrukin,

Thanks for confirming. Do you have other Google speakers/displays that are connected to the same network? What is the current firmware version of your Nest Hub?

Hey Valentine13,

Thanks for sticking with us. How was your device now? Did you manage to switch the channel on your router?

Cheers,

Muddi

Switching to 5 ghz my 3rd band and channel 149 seems to have cleared issues. I believe I’m on 80 mhz (the 3rd also has 160). Just adding if it helps anyone else. Thank you for the help.
