Roku smart bulb is set up in google home but mini say it is not set up

Richard700
Community Member

I set up a  Roku smart bulb in Google home app - it works fine. But when I tell Google Mini to turn it on, it say that it is not setup in Google home. It is set up and it and it and the Mini are in the same home - even in the same room.

What do I have to do to get it to work with voice control???

Hey Richard700,

Thanks for sharing details about the issue here. I know how challenging it is when you can't control your smart lights using your Google Home Mini. Let's get to the bottom of this.

A few questions:

  • What is the specific model of your smart bulbs?
  • Are you able to control the lights from the native and Google Home app?
  • Do you have the same issue when using the Google Assistant app on your phone?

Let's go ahead and try renaming your lights into a unique one. Make sure to avoid using repeated and common names for the Home Mini to recognize the device easily. Follow the steps below to know-how:

  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  2. Select the plug or switch and then Settings Settings icon and then Name.
  3. Enter a name and then tap SAVE.
  4. Check its new nickname.

Let me know how it goes.

Cheers,

The bulbs are Roku Smart Bulb SE A19 White

Yes, I can control the bulbs from the Roku App and also in the Google Home App.

It also works fine with voice control in the Google Assistant App.

Per your suggestion, I renamed it in Google Home -

Still the same problem - my Mini say "Sorry, it looks like that device hasn't been set up yet".

(yes, I tried naming it as light and just a name - same result)

But it is set up AND it works fine in Google Home and with voice control in Google Assistant.

I have several Eufy Bulbs, and they all work with the Mini.

I now remember that I hadI had the same problem over the summer with my Frigidare Air Conditioner - eventually I gave up.

What is the problem, and how can I fix it?

Thanks

Hey Richard700,

Thanks for trying. Let's go ahead and unlink your Roku account from the Google Home app. This will help us refresh the connection between the applications. Follow the steps below to know-how:

  1. Open the Google Home app.
  2. Select the plugs or switches > Settings > Remove device > REMOVE.

Once done, ask your device to sync all your devices by saying, "Hey Google, sync all my devices," then check if you can control your Roku bulbs via voice command.

Keep us posted.

Cheers,

Muddi

This is strange, but I was updating my previous iPhone (just to have as a spare), and just out of curiosity I went to that phone's Google Home App.

The Roku bulbs were not listed - I added them, and boom my Google Mini then recognized them.

Why? And what does that mean when I want to add more devices?? Is there something fundamentally wrong with my current phone's Google Home App????

Hey Richard700,

Sweet! I'm happy to hear that you are able to control your Roku bulbs now. It looks like the devices are not sync properly so you need to refresh the connection between the apps to work. Let's monitor it for 3 days to make sure that you will not experience any issues controlling your smart devices. Feel free to update the thread if you have additional concerns, and we'll be happy to take a look at it for you.

So, how do I refresh the connection between the apps?

Hey Richard700,

To refresh the connection between the apps, you have to unlink and re-link your Roku account to the Google Home app. Once done, you can ask your speaker to sync all your devices by saying, "Hey Google, sync all my devices."

Hope this helps.

I was able to get my Google Mini to recognize the bulbs, but only by adding them to Google home on my older back-up iPhone. I don't know why the Google Home apps are different between my old and new iPhones, and why my Google minis recognized the older one but not the current one.

As far as I can tell, what the issue is, that I had upgraded my iPhone, and had migrated everything onto the new iPhone.

It seems that adding devices in Google Home on the new phone - while they work fine on the phone in the Home and Google apps on the phone - are not recognized by my Mini's.

But when I add them in Google Home on the old iPhone, then they are also recognized by the mini's.

It would be nice to know why, and how it can be fixed.

Hi Richard,

We are grateful for your responsiveness and everything you have done so far. On your new phone, could you uninstall and reinstall the Google Home app? Let's see whether doing that makes a difference.

Keep me posted.

Thanks,

Juni
