Smart Display in wrong language

The box it came in has Chinese characters (Mandarin? not sure) and it boots up in that language. I have added it to my account which has another Hub (in English).

I have tried everything I could find online to change it. Everything on both my Google and Apple accounts lists English as my only langauge. My Google account knows I'm in the U.S. I've done the Manage all assistants --> select language but that just tells them which language *I will be speaking* instead. I don't have any VPNs active. Thanks to Google Translate's camera feature I can tell I'm stuck at the screen that tells me to download the app and configure the device from there, but I can't get it to advance from that screen.

I'm at my wit's end. Do I need to return the device and hope that Amazon sends me one with English as the default? There is no indication on their site which default language will arrive (and all of my addresses on there are in the U.S. as well).

What have I not tried?

Google Nest's products seem to be configured with firmware suited for the country in which they are being sold. See this thread, where another customer suggested trying a factory reset:

It seems you may be dealing with a less-than-reputable vendor if they sent you a Nest Hub designed for sale in China.

Yes, I saw that one and tried the factory reset suggestion. Of course it reset in Chinese again🙄 I suppose I'm just going to return it and write a review warning others away. Thanks!
