So what's up with the claimed temperature sensor?

According to the specifications, the Nest Hub (2nd Gen) has a temperature sensor.

If this is really true, it does not look like the system can access it. If I ask for the room temperature, it tells me that there is no thermostat connected to it.

So... is there really a built-in temperature sensor?? How can I access it?

@altenbach

It looks like there is no user access to this temperature value unless you have a Nest thermostat; scroll down to "Temperature" under "Activity Sensors":

Thanks. Yes, I already looked at that link.

So, in a nutshell, this means the nest hub does NOT really have a temperature sensor, but must rely on outside sensors to report room temperatures. The specification sheet seem highly misleading and should be corrected.

(well, maybe there is a sensor for e.g. the CPU temperature, but that's probably irrelevant for the user)

@altenbach

I took it to mean that if you have a Nest thermostat, it will use the temperature sensor in the Nest Hub to determine ambient indoor temperature for "comfort optimization" (whatever that really means), or if you have Sleep Sensing turned on, the Nest Hub will use the temperature sensor to determine whether there are "environmental disturbances" while you sleep (again, whatever that really means).  At any rate, however the temperature value gets used, it is not viewable by the customer.

OK, I found the "Quality" screen (third page of the sleep sensing report) and there is actually a temperature displayed in the upper right corner that seems about right (62F, I don't currently heat the bedroom 😄 ). Outdoor temperature was colder so it must have read an internal sensor.

Some Nest home screens show the outdoor temperature (obtained from the internet). It would seem useful (and a tiny additional effort) to also show the room temperature. We like information!

They really (really!) should expose the temperature sensor to the user and other apps. Maybe in a future firmware update? 😄
