Using Google voice with speaker. Still having to add to contacts?

Ok per Google the changes to speaker calling requiring you to add a number to your contacts were not supposed to change if you were setup to use Google Fi or Google Voice

"Important: If you use your Google Fi or Google Voice number to make calls on your Google Assistant-enabled devices, there’ll be no change in how phone calls work"

However I am setup in my settings to use my Google voice for voice and communication and it is still requiring me to add to contacts with no way to do so if my phone isn't handy when I use that feature. Which google said also would be part of this is you could add it right then and make the call...

Anyone else getting similar issues or am I missing something somewhere to fix this. I don't want a cluttered up contact list because of this.
