Voice assistants and individuals with disabilities

I work with non-verbal individuals who use speech-generating devices to communicate. They love using voice commands from their devices for voice assistants but activation is pretty inconsistent.  Does anyone have any insight on how we can improve voice assistant response from synthesized voices?
