What fresh hell is this?

Google assistant gets worse every day. The latest issue is that devices won't stop playing media. I've never needed to do anything more than say 'hey google, stop' to end music or other media playing on any device but since yesterday that doesn't work every time. Last night and several times today devices have continued playing music after the 'stop' command, The devices clearly hear me because the four white lights indicate that the assistant has detected 'hey google' and the music stops but it then restarts after a second or two despite the 'stop' command. I've tried additional commands, such as 'stop playing music', 'stop playing media' or 'stop everything' but nothing works except switching off and restarting the device. Why is this happening?

Anyone have a fix for a speaker that won't stop playing media?

I find that to reliability get music to stop playing on my hub, I have to use "Hey Google, stop casting on kitchen display". "Hey Google, stop casting" by itself works unless a different speaker in another room hears me and decides it was the one I was speaking to.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I tried every possible version of 'stop playing' without success. In my case, it doesn't seem to be a command issue but a basic failure of google assistant to control the device. The only solution was to reset everything.

Without suggesting the usual 'switch it off and back on again' advice, does anyone know why voice commands to google assistant sometimes can’t stop media playing on a device?

Does anyone have a solution that works?

Hey dpd,

Thank you so much for posting in this community. I’m sorry to hear that Google Assistance isn’t responding to the voice command correctly on your devices in regards to stopping the music. So don’t worry. It’s a pleasure to help.

It's good to hear from you that you've already taken action on the matter. To provide you with accurate information, please help me out by answering the following questions.

  • What model of Nest device are you using? If you are unsure which Nest device you have, this article will help you identify it: Google Nest speakers and displays.
  • Have you performed any troubleshooting steps before? If so, tell me what you have done so far.
  • Are you experiencing this behavior with other features, or is it specific to music?
  • Does the Google Assistant play the right music requested?

If you have any more information that could be helpful, please let me know.

Best regards,

Daniel

Hello. Thank you for taking the time to reply.

• What model of Nest device are you using?
home, mini, hub max - the home and mini appear most affected by the issue
• Have you performed any troubleshooting steps before? If so, tell me what you have done so far.
the usual ‘switch it off and back on again’ steps - uninstalling and resetting everything
• Are you experiencing this behavior with other features, or is it specific to music?
no, only music playback
• Does the Google Assistant play the right music requested?
yes, almost always - aside from a recent issue with private playlists that I’ve resolved by using a more specific command that includes the words ‘play my youtube music playlist called…’

The fault has occurred only a few times but some of those included music playing on at least one device other than the one to which the command was directed and where at least one of those devices wouldn’t respond to the stop command and sometimes none responded.

Hi, @dpd,

Thank you for your prompt response. I’m truly sorry your speaker and display are not responding to the stop command. I’m happy to assist you further.

Thank you so much for providing all the information requested on the previous post.

To recollect all the possible information, please let me know:

  • What kind of environment does the device fail in? Examples: Is the environment noisy, normal, or quiet?
  • Where is the device placed? Examples: Is the device by itself, up against the wall, next to a TV or audio speaker, next to a microwave?
  • Is there anything that covers the device?

Since the devices are not responding to the stop command, or sometimes they don’t respond at all, please follow these steps:

If these steps don't resolve the problem, consider performing a factory reset on your speaker and display and setting up the devices on the Google Home app.

Please let me know how it goes.

Best regards,

Ana

Thank you for the reply. It's fairly clear that the problem is with google assistant, not the devices, but I'll answer your questions anyway.

• What kind of environment does the device fail in? Examples: Is the environment noisy, normal, or quiet?
quiet domestic setting
• Where is the device placed? Examples: Is the device by itself, up against the wall, next to a TV or audio speaker, next to a microwave?
multiple devices on shelves or tables in different rooms, none adjacent or close to other electronic devices
• Is there anything that covers the device?
no

• Verify the speakers and display are not muted, and make sure you are saying the command 3 to 5 feet from the speaker or display.
confirmed
• If the devices are not muted, please reboot your speaker and display.
done - several times
• Also, adjust the hotword sensitivity of your device; refer to this article for instructions: Adjust how sensitive Google Assistant is to “Hey Google.”
done - several times

I’ve followed all the usual ‘switch it off and back on again’ advice, including resetting all devices.

Have you created a bug ticket with the google assistant team?

Feedback doesn't improve the google assistant if you aren't able to fix the bugs.
