Why are Google Speakers so quirky?

declamatoire

Every few months I run into problems streaming via my various Google Speakers.

As a result, I have invested in an Amazon speaker (as a backup).  I have experienced NO issues so far with this device.  Alexa seems far more cooperative.

I have had two Google Speakers just "stop" working.  I tried everything possible to get them to work but eventually threw them away (after great expense).

Radio stations that should stream suddenly stop doing so.  Recent examples:  stations from France (on which I rely for my work):  France Inter, France Culture, France Info.

There are also radio stations in the USA that suddenly stop working via Google Speakers.

The various threads on Google typically provide very little helpful information for resolving issues.

It could well be that if these radio stations use a service like TuneIn they could have been disconnected temporarily or moved to a different service like iHeart.

I would go to the service's website to see if your radio stations are still there.

Hi @declamatoire ,

Thanks for posting here in the community and I'm sorry for the delay. Help's here!

Thanks for chiming in, @SmartHomeH-TAGS.

In this situation, I suggest the following steps:

  • Make sure the mobile device is connected to the same WiFi network as your speaker or display
  • Make sure you have the latest version of the Google Home app
  • Unlink the radio and link the radio service again. You can refer to the next article: Link your radio services

If your speaker or display doesn't play the radio station you requested, try these steps:

  • Ask for the station in a different way. For example, if the name didn't work, try the call sign or frequency
  • Add more specific information, such as "on [radio service]," to your request
  • When you use the frequency, add the name of a nearby city.  You can find more information in: Listen to radio on your Google Nest speaker

Hope this helps!

Best regards,

Jenniffer
